Broken Glass

I went camping over the New Years weekend. Had my bicycles in the back of the truck with a ratchet strap holding them in. The loose end of the strap somehow came undone and went between the bed and the cab where it was grabbed by the driveshaft. Pulled the bike handlebars through my back window and snapped my strap. I have the sliding rear window but have never used it so I'm thinking I'll get a solid one this time. I can't get over how much these things cost, more than a windshield! Can you believe the sliders are cheaper? What's the deal? $300 bucks for a piece of glass, wow. :-{} Rant over, thanks, feel better now. JR

I broke my slider back in October. Was hunting and had the 4 wheeler in the bed on a rogh dirt road, you can guess the rest. It cost me, or should I say insurance company, nearly $750 to replace the slider with a new one. And it isn't even powered. It is tinted very dark from the factory though so maybe that made it more expensive.



I do agree the prices for glass are outrageous nowadays.

Yup, been there, done that, got the T-shirt. Busted mine out too with a four wheeler bumper. Set me back a cool $300 for a slider and yes it was cheaper than a solid window.

Were you ever able to get all the glass out of the seat fabric? I've vacuumed it a couple of times but there still seems to be glass there. Figures that's the spot my daughter sits in (luckily she wasn't with me at the time). JR

in my case, the window wasn't knocked completely out. It just spider webed. I duct taped it to hold it in place until I was able to get it replaced. But, the glass guys didn't do a very good job of cleaning it out so I too had to do a lot of vaccuming.

I can't speak about the rear slider... we have the windshields on our cars and trucks replaced when they are broken... . almost all of them are $125-135 each, glass truck come to the shop and does them... we don't file with the insurance company as they than want the $250 deductable and profit from the repair... We have a wholesale account with a glass company... I think the last time we paid for a rear window it was something like $230-245... Go to a used car lot and have them give you the name of the guys who do their windows... . that's where the deals are at... .

This must be the season for back windows.



I lost mine the week before Christmas. I was driving home from work on the freeway, heard a pop (thought it was a gunshot but as there was no exit hole from the bullet) and looked back to see my window broken and glass everywhere.



$430 total to get replaced. So much for Christmas money.

Several years ago, I had both front windows smashed in my 91 Dodge van. When I went to get the quote, I almost choked. I said something to the guy about it being very expensive. He said my insurance should cover all of it but the deductable.



When I told him it was all coming out of my pocket, he re-did the estimate. The price came down by 60-70%.



That's when I found out what a racket some (all?) of these glass shops have going.
