Well I have broken what I was told SHOULD be unbreakable for my truck... I guess im that good!:-laf

So now im in the market for something stronger. I am being pushed toward the ATS design by my VB & TC supplier he is telling me he has yet to hear of one breaking. What do you guys think? Any damage reports on the ATS output shaft? Restoring the layer structure...

I am also looking into the Intelligent Engineering design. Anyone using their products? Or better yet, broken them? Welcome to Intelligent Engineering, Inc - Manufacturer of the strongest high performance diesel parts in the world!

Thanks

Jimmy Dale Smith has an ATS in his 9 sec. Ram Rod 4X4 truck. Read the story in Diesel Power mag. Dec. 07, and they said Clint Cannon of ATS had to find a way to lock the TC right after launching. Seen that truck run on Speed channel and it is awesome!I have a full ATS in my truck but can only muster enough hp to get in the low to mid 400's. That 12V needs a strong transmission so I bet you would have good results also. Just my . 02 !!

I have an IE output and am happy with it. Steve or "Opie" Short version of his last name as he calls himself is good to deal with. Send him a shout on his sight and get in touch with him and he can do you a pretty fair price over other brands. I got the output from him about 200 less than all others by talking to him on the phone.

There was a thread in the competition forum on his inputs breaking but I think that was his early ones from a few years ago. I believe he has the bugs worked out now. I haven't heard of anyone breaking his intermediates or output ever. Steve is real active on Comp D and Northwest Bombers I think. He used to be a member here but just didn't want to pay the fee anymore from talking to him.

I don't think most people know what make of billets are in there trannies. Opies shafts have to be requested as most transmission builders run Sonnax from what I understand. There are only about half dozen makers of billet shafts I think.

Do you have a picture of your broke output shaft?

I have used IE shafts but the 2yr warr. he has is not to good!! But he makes good shafts i have had 2 inputs to break. No outputs to break yet. I would like to see a picture of the broke output shaft.

I will get a picture of it tomorrow when I get to work. It is a clean break. I think what threw it over the edge is a nasty case of wheel hop caused by some imperfections in the road. I took it out the night it happened and found that the shaft had some flash rust going on at the outer edges of the break. So I know this thing was ready to go for a while. I find it odd that my dually with its rediculous factory lift blocks and well chosen mods, usauly has no wheel hop, while my all stock except for the edge comp 2wd 2500 will get nasty wheel hop on command.

Here ya go.

On the last picture I was wondering if it is normal for the intermediate shaft to apply enough pressure against the output to cause the polishing found on mine. My input had good clearance when I stacked it together.

Noking, I'm here to trying help, not for a spelling test. . Obviously you are bored with nothing to do, or here to help this thread.

The output shaft pictured is a IE shaft.

Please dont do this to my thread guys. I guess I am back to the ATS shaft. I was looking for a less expensive solution. But, you gotta pay to play... :)

Who's or what brand of shaft is it that you broke anyways? I never saw that in the first post. I think Suncoast uses Sonnax when I calle dlast year.

Are those rust spots in the middle of the shaft? From the pic it looks like a defective chunk that had small pockets in it. I'd call suncoast and see what they say. If it was a defect they may be nice to you. Maybe a discount if not free?

Good luck,

Dave

It said Suncoast in the title. I am being told its an IE shaft. I had someone else tell me yesterday to look into the Goerend bros shaft. Any input on that shaft?

I know it said suncoast in the title but I don't think they make their own shafts. I called on them last year and was told they use Sonnax billet shafts and as far as I know Goerands uses Sonnax also.

Alot of builders use TSC shafts also.
