I caught my driver side mirror on a fence post backing up and it folded forward, but there wasn't enough margin for idiot (me) error in the amount of breakaway and it seems I have popped something loose inside. It is still mounted on the truck and functional, but the detent at center doesn't work anymore and the arm is raised up about a 1/4" at the pivot point (there's a gap between the arm and the base). Is this something I can fix by taking it apart or am I going to just have to replace the mirror assembly and chock it up to an expensive lesson? Any help is much appreciated!

There's a spring and a large clip inside the pivot that holds it together. When I did my 2nd gen/3rd gen Power heated mirror swap, I got to take both of them apart. You can search for the threads on the swap for instructions on how to disassemble them to see if you can repair it. Just remember the spring inside is very strong and can cause injury if not pulled apart properly.

Heres what it looks like pulled apart when I did what surfbeetle did

The post sticking up is what the spring sits in from the underside. . you see a little of the spring in the pic. . you access it from a cover plug on the underside... there is a clip inside to hold the spring when it is put together...

Thanks for the help! I think i have an idea of what I am dealing with now. Will see if I can figure out how to fix it this morning...

I have a drivers side mirror assembly. It does not have the heater.

The only thing wrong with it is the front corner where it connect to the truck is broke off. The rest of it works as far as I know.

If you want it PM me your address and I will get it out to you tomorrow.

When you go to take it apart, some members found it helpful to wrap a towel around the hinge on the mirror so that if the spring popped out, you would not get tagged by it.

I caught my passenger mirror on a garage door frame last week and somehow it popped the glass out. The housing folded forward. Then I pulled forward and heard the sickening crunch of tire over glass. It was then that I cried. $127 later and lighter and I am back together. Just saying... ...

Thanks again to all for chiming in. I haven't been able to get around to spending time on it, luckily it's not hanging off the side of the truck though maybe that have prompted me to fix it quicker. Busy week ahead, but hope to have a chance to look at it on the 5th.

Thanks again!

Happened to me also last week. I took it to the dealer who wanted $495. 80 for the passenger mirror. I was able to find one on ebay for $194. 00. Should be here today.
