I was driving my brothers 04. 5 truck today & out of nowhere it starts knocking really loud. For the last week it has had a shuddering at low rpms & the problem has been getting worse. The knocking is really loud & alot of smoke coming from the exhaust even at idle. I believe a injector is stuck open. We hauled it to a Dodge Service garage today where my cousin is the service manager. He got his boys started on it right away & should have results tomorrow. I will post info as I get informed.

That is what I was afraid of... . valve seat. Thank God it wasn't! My cousin called today & said that it is bad injectors as I thought. They believe that 2 or 3 may be bad & who knows what they will find after they swap them out. The truck has seemed to be losing a little power slowly, but he still runs pretty close to me. Luckily I shut the truck off as soon as I heard a noise. I may have lucked out..... keep ya posted.

Got back from my trip to Aruba & called to pick the truck up. I was told that it isn't done because the injector was mushroomed & gave the guys a hard time coming out. They put a scope in the cylinder & nothing showed up as damage in the valves, piston etc. , but what would cause the injector tip to mushroom at the end?

Probably carbon deposits on tip maybe?

Possible... . good point, but the tech is saying that it was from the injector just dumping fuel & filled the cylinder. The truck is still in the shop. They are now replacing the turbo... . which has never built boost right from day 1. The reason for the turbo replacement is that the truck won't start after it runs for a while & is shut off. I think it is a leaking fuel line/injector, but they say that the wastegate is sticking open & not letting the truck build compression. :-laf I'm not gonna argue... . a new turbo is a nice gesture due to bad diagnostics in my opinion. I just hope that my brother gets his truck back before christmas... . by then it may be fully rebuilt before they get it figured out. :-laf

If the truck isn't building compression, i don't think a turbo will cure that. Also how do u know the truck wasn't building boost from day 1? If it wasn't building boost it would of not beeen running well since day 1 under load.

The tech argued with me that it is the turbo that is causing the no start. I think that he has a fuel leak in a connector tube, injector seal etc. that is causing a no start because it is losing its prime. The truck starts & runs fine with a small shot of either, but won't start without either. I can't believe that the guy thinks that the turbo is causing this problem. The turbo would give different peak boost numbers since day 1. Sometimes you would see 18psi max wot & have less power... . other times 28psi spikes & run great. You can be cruising down the road & a cel would illuminate with a overboost code although the turbo is only producing 20psi boost. You erase the code & back to normal. We changed the map sensor & no change in performance. We tried different boost gauges & no change in readings. The wastegate is definately sticking on it since new.

yea, I think the only way a turbo could cause you to lose compression is if a piece of it went through your intake and was holding one of your valves open. I hope you get everything worked out buddy.

I called the shop today & here is what they said. The turbo is not the cause[duh] & the truck is losing fuel pressure which is not letting it start. [yeah... already know that] "we are bringing in a tech to take a look at the truck & see if we can find a solution". 3 weeks later they decide to bring in someone who knows what they are doing. IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK ALOT LIKE CHRISTMAS!

Good news! The shop called today & said that they found another bad injector. They replaced it & the truck still needed either to start. Then the tech said something that made me laugh. "the cause of the no start turned out to be a leaking connector tube seal". Hate to say I told him so! We are picking the truck up tomorrow after work. Could have got it today, but they had to order a rocker cover gasket.

Truck is back home, but the CEL is on & code for overboost is present. This code would come & go before the injector popped. It erased & fingers crossed.

I need help. The code is coming up every time that you start the truck & not only po236, but multiple fuel delivery error codes. We changed the map sensor today & no change. I noticed that his exhaust manifold is cracked in 4 places & the turbine housing is cracked. Can this cause these codes? The truck is getting a new turbo & manifold soon, but need to get it figured out first.

UPDATE. We took the truck to Advanced Diesel Technology today & Doug fixed it in 10 minutes. The wire harness that plugs on to the map sensor had a prong pushed up in & wasn't making contact. He fixed the wire & the truck is running great. This is why I recommend ADT to fellow members. They are Awesome!
