Random chunks...

Is my detroit unusable?

Do you think I could clean up the edges of that detroit and put a new bearing on it or is it totally shot?

At this rate I'll never make it to Scheids. . at least in the truck!

Garrett-I myself have never successfully retrieved a broken axle out of a carrier(numerous axles from 5. 0 ford 8. 8 rears) once it has broke inside. They seem to WEDGE themselves to the point of no retrieval. I. E. - if I was to of gotten broken axles out successfully I probably would've re-used the carrier if it hasnt got any obvious cracks, etc. Also, make sure if you get the broken pieces out to inspect the splines in the carrier for big burrs, and twisted or broken splines.

So- Id say give it a shot, because you are probably going with some aftermarket axle shafts now anyway and those things are pretty tough. Oh and I agree that the hopping issue may need to be solved, or this IS going to happen again. ;)

Garret, I don't think you will have very good luck with that detroit unless you can get the spline section replaced. Ouch. It would make a great paper weight though. Get a set of AT's. Adjust the AFC like we discussed, then something I am going to try to do is let the truck roll when I hit 15 PSI while spooling, making sure to take up all of the driveline slack, by easing up on the brakes, then pour the coals too it after the first couple feet go by. I have watched my last two videos and my front jumps up a little more than I would like to see. Nothing like yours though.

Are you going back with another detroit or going to try something else? Whose axles are you going to get?

^^^the reason I am asking so many queshtions is you are above my power level, and I will be following in your carnage path, or maybe dodging it by learning from your misfortune. :p Oh and BTW isnt Daves transmission the shiznit, I went with him after calling him and watching a couple of your videos, thanks!

Haisley axles and an ARB. The haisley axles are nice because they will fit under the wheel centers. The SCS axles have a large billet driver. Haisley axles and a detroit wouldn't be a bad option either. I told Garret if he broke his axles he would tear up the detroit. I just had no idea he would tear it up that badly. :) You don't have to tell me Garrett, I already know I was right. :)

Back on my soap box. I know pulling is a lot of fun, but if your gonna put in high dollar parts make sure there are no low dollar parts near the high dollar parts that will cause carnage. Tearing up stock driveshafts isn't bad(I have borken two fronts) but what sucks is when you put in a nice piece(like a locker) and it gets torn up by the axles. If your wanting a low budget locker, weld it up and use the stock axles. It will suck on the street, but you can pick up open rear ends for probably $100, and stock axles for like a $100 apiece.

Garret,

I would dump the dana 80 all together and stick a 3rd gen 11. 5 AAM (it gets the job done!) under there.

Much tougher even in stock form (flame suit on).

I am not sure any axle will hold up to that kind of launch. I noticed that you have been breaking allot of part. What tires are you running and at what pressure in the rear, you might want to start by making a change in tire size.

I am running some Mud Terrain tires.

I need to get something done, and fast! I have 3 pulls this weekend. The search goes on. I would really like to keep a Detroit or something similar. . I don't really want a spool in the rear.

Well, I already dumped the Dana 70, went through a lot of parts in the D80. . I really can't see sticking more money into yet another axle altogether... .

Lots of people are getting the D80s to hold up. .

I just break a LOT of stuff. . I could probably tear up an anvil with a feather without too much trouble.
