While paging through the forums the other day, I came across a discussion where someone mentioned Brake Specific Fuel Consumption. This sparked several thoughts and I went looking for BSFC charts for several midrange diesels (including the HPCR) and was not able to find ANY! I recall from past research that this curve was commonly on all the complete spec sheets ( at least from Cummins) but of all the spec sheets I can find now, not one has that curve published.

1) Does anyone know of any BSFC curves that are currently available?

or 2) do I need to call/visit the dealer in person?

Any thoughts or help is appreciated. -Eric

Good luck. The morons that call themselves dealers wouldn't have any idea what a BSFC curve is. Someone in Chrysler Engineering might, but good luck finding that person. I doubt that Cummins would release the data specific to the engine they build for Dodge as it would probably be considered proprietary.

Cummins no longer publishes (or supplies) BSFC curves. This was primarily due to the fact that people were using the curves to "predict" fuel ecconomy which is entirely invalid since the curves are based on 100% load. That is, unless you drive at 100% load all the time.

I know the mean fuel flow rate of my truck since new: 1. 87 GPH. If I convert that to lb/hr and divide by the engine rated horsepower (305) I get 0. 051 lb/hr/hp.

This number by itself is almost nonsense, since I've normalized mean fuel flow by an instantaneous power rather than by the mean power developed over the same time period. But I suspect that number could be used to compare relative efficiency of any two engines.

What do you guys think?

[This thread would probably be better served in the "General Diesel Topics" forum... ]

No BSFC numbers available for 3rd gens yet? In previous issues of the TDR magazine they had BSFC charts for the 1st and 2nd gens... I wonder if the TDR editors can get a hold of any? :-laf :D
