My best friend pulled up to a stop sign and then started to go when the truck started running rough. He took it home changed fuel filter and air filter with no change. So he took it to the dealer and they said they will be ordering a new engine. and then gave him a chevy gasser in place of it. Which really sucks since he is 22 years old, likes to show off and drives 100 miles a day to and from work.

Luckily the truck was still stock other than being straight piped. so no questions were asked. He will be without it for about 2 weeks.

They have not turn it apart yet but said there is a lot of blowby. I will keep ya"ll updated as I find out.

Well found out what happened. The number 6 piston has a hole in it. The note from the mechanic said the a cylinder balance test showed number 6 at 48%, so he swapped the 6 injector with #4 that was at 105% and number six was still at 48% and #4 was now at 78%. So they ordered a new short block. he got it back yesterday and could not believe the mess of grease and oil they left under the hood. We then found that the aluminum pump cover on the front of the engine is cracked, it was low on coolant and the turbo oil return line was leaking. He turned right around and went back and had a :-{} with them. They will be correcting the problems Those are the very reasons I refuse to do business with this dealer, that and I also worked there in the shop for a while. That place is a joke.

Gary - or anyone, what's with the # 6 cylinder????

Seems like the #6 piston has a tendency to run hotter than those further forward in the block, either from poorer coolent flow, or other design factors. This occasionally surfaces and causes failures similar to this thread in hard towing, heavily loaded situations, and especially if power mods increase stress even more than normal - but sometimes, we see reports of problems even with street driven, lightly loaded stockers...

Lucky to get a loaner at 22. Lots of insurance companys won't allow under 25 on rental/loaner. Tell him to complain and maybe they'll give him a used Yugo.

I'm with Joe. The hole in the piston is more likely caused by an injector running too rich (dirty, dribbling etc. ) than anything else.

There have been several reports over time of this happening due to a injector leaking. Blow torch a hole through a piston. One engine was replaced and the NEW ONE melted a hole in a piston in less then 1200 miles.

Swex, I'm with you on this one. The 3G's are not like the 2G's 24V or 12V. Most people don't understand this. A lot closer tolerances to meet emissions, etc. MOST of the problems we hear of on the 3G's are from BOMB'd trucks. Not saying a 3G cannot be BOMB'd properly, it is just more difficult/complicated than BOMBing a 2G.

All stock and staying that way. Call it boring or whatever you want, but at 325/610 stock from the factory, I have plenty of "reliable" power and I have a 7/100k warranty on the motor. Those of you who BOMB don't. You are your own warranty station.
