i thought about that. you could cut more clearance (metal off) that cross member...
A side note i have about 1500lbs in truck bed at all times. i hand-loaded a pallet of sod on top (cab high) an checked clearance it was close but then i just aired the bags up and was at factory height. (but i do have the 1 ton overloads)

i believe this is the only reason dodge say not to put the drive shaft on the older trucks, per mopar notes when parts department looked it up. )
