Hello everyone. Well I got my Power Pup in today. Right away I put it on Extreme, Wow, my truck really moved. But it seems like the power was surging (not real sure). It sure did smoke my tires. Then I put it on Performance, the difference from stock was not that great, or at least it wasn't what I was expecting. Maybe I just need to drive it some more. This is my first real mod, so maybe I was just expecting too much. Or am I missing something? Well, I will drive it some more, but if I don't get that warm and fuzzy maybe I will sell it. Any possible takers near the Phoenix area?

Going from Extreme back to performance would feel like a big let down.

Try going from stock up to performance and see if you notice the differance.

all that power you might wan't to put a set of guages in that truck or the outlook monitor fill in your truck details in your signature

Get gauges for sure! When I put the Pup on performance two days ago, my Westach gauges went crazy! My thermocoupler is installed in the exhaust manifold, so temps are higher I believe. If you can't feel the power difference on your truck, something somewhere is wrong. My truck is the 600. The Pup definitely felf different. Getting on the freeway, it feels like a 11. 8 liter Cummins (two 5. 9s!!!). Too much power for the stock transmission. Not comfortable with it, or the EGTs without exhaust and other mods done yet.

you might have one of the first version boxes. where did you get it from? the first box I bought had a very annoying surge and was low on power.

What is the build date of the box that has been updated? Wouldn'tthey have the PUP recalled, if an update was necessary?

Well I drove it today quite a bit on Performance and I can notice a difference in power, especially when I am doing about 30-35 and I decided to pass someone. When I puched it the rear end started to swing around, so I can see a power difference. Yeah I did see my egts go crazy on Extreme. So I am happy with it. I don't know the build date, but it came with a notice that says it is compatible with 04', 04. 5' and above. So the end result is that the Power Pup kick a_s! Has anyone towed in the Performance mode? Thanks for your response everyone. Merry Chistmas all. Oo.

i tow in the perf mode all the time. works excellent and low egt. i tow a 32' 5er.

a friend got a pup and he noticed a 2mpg gain w/ same 5er same rte using the perf mode

btw,,,,,,new programing on the pup for 04. 5s and 05s. on tow setting [50hp] it is timing only. performance [90hp] is timing and duration. no rail pressure increase. on insane mode [130hp] add a bit more duration and approx 30hp worth of timing

also,,,,,,,,, the flash for the mpg is on the programer where when put back to stock it is programed in the ecm

Hey Muddy, you guys getting any of this "surging" and slow start that others are rerorting with the EZ? Also what is a good price on the PUP? thanks, Doc

the surging may also be the truck running out of fuel. the first fuel filter on my 03 was black at 9200 mi the 04 truck filter was changed at 5300 mi and it also was very dirty. I also killed the stock lift pump on the 03 at 15000 mi

Can the dealer tell the pup was on the truck if you change it back to the stock setting? Also, Where is the best place to buy a power pup? The Bully dog website says that they are $499. 00. Is that what you guys paid for them? Thanks

There are cheaper prices out there. :D You just have to know where to look. ;)

ATVX4, I got mine at City Muffler & Performance. They are in OK. First found them on Ebay, but just called them and ordered it. Total was $409. 00 with 2nd. day air. 1-800-492-4544.

doc, none of that with the pup on mine or the many many other rigs ive driven or riden in with the pup installed. one early 04 had a flatspot with his early production dl'er but bdog installed ltr program and the guy is very happy now. i will pm ya with the price that our local members been gettin em for

coseng, railpressure increase is on perf 30hp worth and extreme 50hp worth. this is on 03 and early 04. on the 04. 5 and 05 ya only get a pressure increase 30hp worth on the extreme mode. the [extra]timing increase w/ the 600 model pups help to improve the poor mpg of the 600 trucks. the rail pressure increase is moderate and very safe and the combination is good for low egt

like was mentioned trucks with a surging problem it may be cased by bad supply of fuel. im a believer in canning the stock lftpump in favor of the dd pump or the other good choices available esp while running the higher levels

Thanks muddymess for the info. Some guys love the power pup... others seem to hate it. It sounds like what I would want for my truck, but some of the negative posts make me a litte hesitant to buy. I had an EZ on my 2001 and liked it, but don't like the pressure only option on the 3G's.

Thanks,

Carl

yep,,,the rail prssre only isnt good when used in hi levels. i used the bdog adjustable before the pup. prsure only. i ran w/ it off or in 50 hp levels. i used the 90hp levels only a few times. too many reports of the valve in the rail going t u and also a few cases of injectors cracking from the excess pressure. 50, maybe 60 hp worth of pressure is enuff. i like that the combo of the timing/duration/moderate pressure of the pup keeps egt cool. no way cld i tow w/ the pressre only box in the 90hp setting. it get hot fast on the pyro when towing. 90hp setting with the pup it is cool enuff to make icecubes on the downpipe :) well,,,almost

Just returned from a fiver trip N. cal. to S. cal.

Power Pup on my 600 in tow mode; about 10. 6 mpg total weight with trailer was just under 20,000 lbs.

Stock truck with tsb 18-037-04 did just at 11. 0 mpg, and seemed to tow just as strong as the Pup in tow mode.

Today, in stock mode, my "high" mpg is back; confirming that the newest Pup remembers your dealer reflash!!!!

In performance mode with truck empty, the transmission feels like it is a big mush pot. I don't know if I can trust the Pup not to tear up the trans. The acceleration is great, love the off the line and mid range, almost scary how fast it runs; but no trust in the auto transmission.

Overall, not sure what to think of the Pup. Not confident with it to use it, and really don't like the big big difference in mileage between the reflash average of about 17 mpg, and the Pups 13. 5 or so in performance mode.

Could my box be better if it was made specific for my 600? Maybe my box is too generic to be a good benefit in tow mode. Maybe that works best for the SO motor (235 hp)???

Any ideas? Oo.

So you lose 3. 5 mpg with the PUP and no load?? Seems like a big price to pay for acceleration and no gain with load??

I have been changing my pup setting with each fill up. My driving habits are not consistant enough to make a real comparison. To get a SOP feel on the different modes, I always return to stock between the tanks with the enhanced modes. Here are my impressions.

All modes except stock makes smoke. That makes me think that tow mode has duration. I thought timing would not make smoke. Am I wrong? Fuel milage seems the same in all modes, but it is improving as time goes by. I almost have 10K on the truck

Extreme mode make my clutch slip. I have to make plans for an upgrades because I would run it in this mode all the time if I had a heavy clutch, ATS manifold, and maybe a turbo upgrade.

Tow mode makes the truck feel good, but I cannot make 3rd gear launches without smoke. I like doing that in city driving to reduce the number of shifts I have to make and I am not in a hurry. 3,5 in town and if speed increase above 40-45, 6th gear.

Perfomance is fun and does not seem too distructive (heat, slippage). From this point on I will probably alternate between performance mode and stock until I can get the upgrades done. I will alternate so that I can appreciate the total power of the truck.
