Well a few of you asked how I liked my VAC3. 1 box so I figured I would put in on the dyno at the Boise Dyno Day this past weekend. Here are my uncorrected results. Also, both uncorrected and corrected graphs. I apologize for the picture quality as I couldn't get my scanner to work. Runs were on a Dynojet in 6th gear:

Run 1 = Pup on Extreme; VA = off for boost fooling only=== 406 HP/842 TQ

Run 2 = Pup on Extreme; VA = 100%================ 456 HP/969 TQ

Run 3 = Pup on Extreme; VA = off for boost fooling only=== 410 HP/844 TQ

Run 4 = Pup on Extreme; VA = 50%================= 434 HP/925 TQ

I did a search on the 305/555 stock numbers =~ 275 HP/475 TQ so I guess I'm pretty happy with these results (+191 HP/+494 TQ)!!

SRadke was the other 3rd genner there and also had some pretty impressive numbers.

Impressive numbers for sure, how high of EGT's did you see and why wouldn't you dyno in 5th vs overdrive?

To tell you the truth I didn't watch the boost and pyro. This was my first time ever on a dyno so I was pretty nervous and busy watching the tach and the dyno operator Don B at Meridian Motorsports. I did see the water temp hit 210 F after the 4th run though so I imagine it was getting hot just sitting there spinning the rollers. On the street, in comparison, this stack wouldn't move my water temp gauge measureably at WOT.

As for 5th versus OD, that's what I was told to run in order to load up the engine. Normally in 5th on the street with this stack the EGT never went past 1100* before I ran out of rpm's and had to shift, but in 6th it will hit 1300* petal to the floor at ~75 mph. Is it better to run in 5th (direct)? If so, I'll do that next time.

Next time I'm on a dyno I will have a co-pilot to watch the gauges for sure.

Well. . I am not the one to ask that cuz I have never even been on one.

Maybe thats how they all do it but basic reasoning is that 1 to 1 is going to be the more accurate hp reading IMO. I would think 6th would give you a lower number same as 7th or 8th if you had em.

When I had my 02 I had it put on the dyno twice two different times, locations, and companies. The first time I went down to bullydog and had them run it. They ran it all the way through 6th gear. The second time I had my local caterpillar shop dyno it and he chose 5the gear because it was Direct. Both times the numbers came out really close between 3-4 hp. Corey

Do you remember what he laid down? We have pretty similar setups.

He did a bit more on HP and about the same on TQ as me. Muddy posted everyone's corrected numbers here, so from my graphs you can probably back-calculate the uncorrected #'s:

Scott showed me his graphs and he pointed out that defueling trait that he posted about recently. Could have fooled me because this was him on the dyno:

How can you tell that's him? All I see is a bunch of black smoke. . :D

Julius, Nice numbers!!

I never would have guessed that stacking a BDDL and VA3. 1 would do so well. I also would have thought that because the BDDL adds pressure as well, that both together would be too much, but maybe because the VA adds most of its pressure down low in the RPM range, it doesn't get that high. I have been trying to decide which box to stack with my TST after getting rid of my EZ, and finally picked up a BDDL today to try. Maybe I will pick up a VA3. 1 as well and stack all three!

Jeff-

From what I read posted on various diesel boards - in particular from DLeno and AK Ram IIRC - was that if the BDDL does say 20 HP worth of pressure and you stack a 60 HP pressure box on top, then you don't get 80 HP worth of pressure. Rather, you get ~40 HP more of pressure to make up the difference.

With this stack the butt-o-dyno tells me it feels the same on the mid to top end as when I stacked the TST on 5x5 with the VA box, but this stack's low end feels a lot more smoother delivery to me than the TST/VA stack. That is, the stack will hit 40-41 psi boost fairly quick, but not as quickly as the TST when it sees that 12 psi or so number. To many the VA box is not the HP king, but it sure delivers the power nicely! Don't get me wrong, it will not beat the TST combo for shear power, but I just couldn't live with the TST codes anymore.

The other bonus is reading Don M (F1 Diesel guy) post with pictures on NW Bombers comparing injectors running the EZ box versus the VA box.

Lastly, this stack also rolls the black coal-smoke on-command right off idle until the boost comes up! Couple of days ago my girlfriend looked into the passenger mirror and said, "Where did that car go you just passed? I can't see a thing with all that smoke! Is your truck OK?" :-laf

That's hillarious! :-laf

I just installed MBRP duals a couple weeks ago to help distribute the smoke more evenly. The back quarter panels and bumper are BLACK on both sides now. I should have got a black truck!

I got rid of the EZ because of the post on the NWBombers site. I am going to get a VA3. 1 ordered up today and when I get home in a couple weeks I will test out the TST/BDDL/VA stack for 2 weeks while I am off. I will be making another trip to Spokane (1000 miles roundtrip) so I should get some good testing in.
