probably so. But it also might be do dumb as to use only % engine load and make broad assumptions in some look-up table that maps %load to fuel consumption. really, I wouldn't rule that out.

Sure, the ECM knows what rail pressure is (unless fooled by a box). It also knows what pulse width is (unless fooled by a box). And it knows what injector flow rate is, but that assumes that there is accurate consistency among all stock injectors, and that you havent put on different ones.

If mpg is calculated with real parametric rigor (not % load) then the downloader has a better chance of correcting the overhead computer, since rail pressure and pulse width are now visible. But still, the overhead can't be trusted even in the stock truck so I wouldn't put much hope in accuracy with a downloader.

Doug,

Will you be testing the downloader? If so will it be in time to make the box article for the next edition of the TDR?

Issue 45 is in your hands now, and contains the first (introductory) article w/o specifics. I couldn't make the press deadline for issue 46 so unfortunately there is no fueling box article in the next issue. Press deadline for issue 47 is next month and I will make that. the issue 47 article will concentrate on the "100 HP" or so boxes running on a stock truck. no downloader

My plans for issue 48 have to do with the bigger boxes (TST and Edge, assuming the latter is available). I'm watching the downloader thing develop and I'm in touch with Bullydog engineering as well. I actually haven't made a decision yet on evaluating the downloader.

JPalese -- there are a lot of details disadvantages, and advantages to either. Could you could describe what precise goals you are trying to acheive, what you are trying to avoid, and what you are trying to optimize? that would better equip me to comment.

This doesn't sound like the information hungry DLeno that I know from past threads. What decision is there to make on evaluation or has Bullydog asked you to back off?

Richard

still hungry as ever :D I have to concentrate on the original scope to fulfil my issue 47 obligations, and just don't have the time right now to deal with the downloader.

No, bullydog has not asked me to back off. I just re-read my previous post and it does sort of raise questions. sorry about that. let me clarify: I am in close contact with bullydog and there are no issues or questions relating to an evaluation. Its only an article scoping and time thing, not an interest thing. It took me the better part of a year to get where I am on the fueling boxes (understanding them, given my time constraints) and I just don't know as much about the downloaders yet. So the "decision" has more to do with me fully understanding the downloader technology and what direction and scope the fueling box articles will take. Its really quite hunger driven, don't misunderstand! :D

Excellent reply. Thank you for clearing that up for us. Thought for a minute that we had lost you in this arena. It's great to know that we haven't! Thank you again for all your time and effort in getting the information out to the public so that we can make educated decisions.

Hi Doug:

Primary goals are maximum fuel mileage and longevity/reliability of the truck. Hopefully, driveability is improved in the above quest.

Thanks for all the time and effort you put into your research.

with a single box, stock truck, no turbo, maybe intake and exhaust, I'd have to say get a pressure/timing box and stay under 100HP or so. The PPE is a good candidate on paper anyway (I haven't seen it). That and the Banks are the only timing/pressure boxes out there today. I think Quadzilla and Bullydog are working on some.

Does the bullydog downloader work on the 600 and if so has anyone used it? Thanks.

Outside of your right foot,... how do you control the power on a downloader type upgrade?,..... especially one with that much power it would seem you'd have to do several serious upgrades b-4 it would be feasible. Pls advise.

just treat the downloader the same as any other box upgrade. it does all the same things (various combinations of pressure, timing, duration) with no more advantages in terms of other requried upgrades. Adjustability is a disadvantage -- you have to re-flash the truck with the desired program. no adjustable switches.

I'm sure interested to hear more about this downloader. I'm pretty sure I'm willing to trade in cab adjustability for swearing and struggling plugging in a box.

Doug,

Maybe you could research it a little better. You can control power from the in cab monitor. I dont know the name of it right now but it is the same as the Attitude. 0%, 25%,50%,100%. Sounds like four levels to me..... ? Plus if you add in a volumizer, there are three more sub levels... ..... Sounds a little adjustable to me..... !
