Some more improvments to my trailer

Resealing Window with Eternabond

The mod to Cumminz's coupler does not put the load any further back on the bed. It does essentually make the trailer longer though. Any additional loads created by this setup are not placed on the hitch ball, but on the coupler and pin box.

extended hitch

My truck has a 2" lift on the front which makes the truck ride level with no load. I does squat about 1. 5" under load. The picture is also before I replaced the 15" tires and wheels with taller 16" tires/wheels to help level the trailer. Like klenger stated the extended hitch still places the same load over the top of the ball and does place more load on the pinbox.

Think about it... the best of all worlds is placing your load low in the bed and just an inch above the bed of your truck. This places the least side to side stress on your trucks suspension,,,,,BUT the fifth wheel type hitches are better choices for carrying a load. BUT they do suspend your load 12" or so above the bottom of your bed. That is a lever also. Damned if you do and damned if you don't...

CUMMINZ, does the short box compromise your manoeuvrability? I would think that a long box is always better for towing 5th wheels. Grizzly

bacca

The SB quad cab has a long enough wheelbase and my truck grosses 10,100# with camper loaded and hooked up. Running along at 65 or 70mph it is large/long enough to steer very good. I have absolutely no wobble or wiggle when running at those speeds. It is very manuverable and short turning enough for my wife to drive with ease. I have heard several mention wavering in high winds with their 5er hitch. I can see you getting sway motion with a 5er hitch due to hitch point being 15" or so above the bottom of the bed. I don't get that with a flipover ball. Load it low at right at the bed frame. We made a trip to the NC beach as we speak and drove through very high winds and rain coming down here and camper/truck was as solid as a rock.
