After my truck is run for approx. 20 mins. and I come to a stop, there is a strong odor of burnt oil. No oil leaks have been found and no oil is found on exhaust. I did find the breather reservoir full of water and oil/dirt accumulated on fan, fan shroud, radiator and surrounding area. Degreased all of the above and problem still exists. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks - fetzel

Welcome aboard!

Did you just change the oil, per chance? If so, that smell will be with you for the first 500 mi. or so.

Also, you shouldn't have that much blowby, I didn't look at your sig before replying, if you bought the truck used do you possibly have a leak somewhere? If you clean everything up real good you'd have a better chance of finding a leak, otherwise if your breather bottle is full that's a little odd... .

fetzel- Go to 'user CP' and update your profile and then add your sig when you post so we know what kind of vehicle and what year you're talking about... ... .

Welcome to the TDR! Or as my wife puts it, the Turbo Diesel Cult. I had the same problem after I changed my oil. I use Rotella and it stinks for about the first 500 miles or so too. I have been told Delo and a few others do the same.

My overflow bottle was almost full the first time I changed my oil too. In fact at one point, it had spilled out and got into the fan and made a mess, like you had mentioned. Some guys are eliminating the bottle and just continuing the hose down along the frame somewhere and letting it drain that way.

Hey, where is this over flow tank? I have the same issue of oil on my radiator? I also use Rotella and yes it stinks but does a great job.

I agree with the above, it's the blowby bottle. I noticed the smell right after driving my brand new truck off the lot. If you want to get rid of the smell and save your engine from getting oil coated, remove or relocate the bottle. Even if the bottle is empty, you will still get the smell, as smoke still seeps out and the fan blows it into the cowl and into the cab. I removed my bottle and ran a 18" or so piece of 3/4" heater hose straight down.

Hope this helps.

I also removed the bottle and extended/relocated the hose. However, even prior to doing so I only had the smell in the cab right after an oil change, which is not unusual since everyone says they have the same symptoms for upwards of 500 mi. or so after an oil change w/ the Rotella.

I thought fetzel was saying that he'd emptied his bottle and it was filling right back up. That was what I meant when I said it was odd, I don't believe the bottle should be 'filling up' on a regular basis, I'd think that was unusual, no?

also check the cowl seal

Sometimes the cowl seal will drop down and lay on the turbine housing where it burns and comes right into the vents. A missing cowl seal will allow oil vapors to enter the cab air intake as well.
