I recently switched to amsoil series 3000 5W-30 synthetic in both my welder and truck. Since the last change about 4000km ago I have "lost" a quart somewhere in both my truck and welder. Any ideas???

Thanks

Dave

I noticed the same thing when I went to the 5w-30, seemed to use more in the summer and less in the winter. I ended up going back to the 15w-40 Amsoil and the oil use was gone.

On my sons 99 he put the 5W30 in after he broke the engine in and it would use a little between oil changes. He switched to the 15W40 last oil change and his oil level stays on the full mark now. But we are down in a warm climate. Seems like the 5W30 would work good up there.

Mine done that when I switch to premium blue 2000/blend, the valvoline tech at a TDR rally told me to give it a couple if changes, and it worked, no comsuption from then on. He could not explaine why either.

In the past, I have found it to be pretty common for oil consumption to increase slightly when switching brands - different composition of the oils I suppose - but things always returned to normal after a few thousand miles down the road...

Also, with synthetics it is best to check the level cold, you can read up to a quart low when checking hot. This is due to synthetics ability to coat surfaces better.

Very true statement! It is best to check the oil before starting the vehicle, or at least 5 hours after it has been run. I too have seen situations where there has been up to a quart low when reading while the engine is hot.

When I received delivery on my '99 in October of '98 I took it home and dumped the oil and changed to Amsoil. I only put on about 12K miles a year and change the oil once a year. the amount I loose over a year is only from the breather and does not show up on the stick. I have been using synthetic oil since it came out and Popular Mechanics did an article on it. All my previous engines were gas and when I got rid of the vehicles the engines were still like brand new with close to 200K on them. I am a firm believer in synthetics but if you have more then 10K on crude do not convert to synthetic as this will lead to high consumption.

You should always break the engine in with petroleum oil for 5k to 10k to allow the rings to seat properly. As far as not changing over after 10k, this is not based in fact, as long as you do not have leaks or already experience high consumption you can change over at any time. I switched mine to Royal Purple at 115k (bought used) and everything is fine.

When I got the Dodge it had 50,000 on it with Delo 400, switched it to Redline 15W40, over 5,000 miles since then and it hasn't burnt a drop. It doesn't blow oil out of the bottle either, haven't drained it yet.

We do the same thing on the race motor, 2 races with Valvoline, then pour Redline in it. :D
