Gary;

It sounds like you added the oil directly to your fuel tank, and thus the oil was not mixed well and a glob found its way to the transfer pump. John in Mesa AZ mixes his with diesel before he adds it. The other way would be add it and them add your fuel from the nozzle at the pump to get it diluted. I'm still watching this one.

Gary ,

Is there a reason why new clean motor oil isn't used instead old oil ?

Thanks

Robert

I was just experimenting with a potential and dollar effective way to actually use the old oil, rather than haul it off to a recycler. I'm pretty convinced that my "problem" is related to too heavy a concentration at about 30:1 on the used oil - adding 10 gallons of fresh diesel raised that ratio to about 40:1, and better LP operation, but not back to normal yet.

In spite of the talk, I doubt many here are using high concentrations of bio fuels, but I wonder if those who are, have fuel pressure guages and monitor PSI changes?

I pretty much suspect what one fellow suggetsed further above, the used engine lube raised the viscosity of the fuel, and also possibly added a tendency to foam - and now the LP cavitates at the drop of a hat. No real problem, since the Carter 4600 pusher fills the gap, but I hope all returns to normal when I next top off the fuel tank...

It is perfectly okay to run used engine oil in the engine... I would run it through a filter first though to get out any large particles. I would say it would be less chance of any clogging problems in a 1st or 2nd gen engine since all the tolerances are less than the 3rd gen engines. As for emissions, wouldnt it just be better to use the old oil for something useful than waste your time using more energy to recycle it back to new oil? And second, who cares about soot and cats, we don't run cats around here

I have looked into the recycling setups that pump oil into the fuel tank, but I figure for the cost of not only buying it, but installing it, I'd rather utilize the oil some other way. We have a shenandoah waste oil burner that we heat our shop and home with. One benefit of a waste oil burner utilized in a furnace is, no one can sample my fuel at my home like the DOT likes to do on the road. I was speaking to a DOT official at the fair grounds last year about oil burner kits for a truck, he said it was frowned upon and illegal in several states already for not only emissions, but for tax evasion. :rolleyes: It seems like a crock to me, but knowing the DOT, I wouldn't be surprised they want to get every last cent they can from fuel taxes.

I reuse my engine oil in a waste oil furnace for our shop and home heating, I am also looking into a heat exchanger to install inline to our hot water heater. This will eliminate our domestic water heating costs, something I think is greatly overlooked in most families energy useage bills.

Our waste oil furnace is a shenandoah model. Check them out if you reall want to reutilize waste oil. A few neighbors around us give their used oil as well. This gives us enough to heat our home year round for nothing but the cost of furnace upkeep like filter cleaning and nozzle adjustment,( something I had to do with a #2 burner furnace as well).
