 I'm about to buy a 2016 Ram 2500 used from a private seller. Approx. 35,000 miles 6.7, Aisin, 4wd, SLT. Super clean truck. I also had been looking at a 2012 3500 with 58,000 miles Laramie, 6.7, 4wd, 68RFE also very clean. 16 still has warranty, 12 did not. I'm mostly buying the 2500 cause it has warranty. They are both essentially the same price. I am nervous about all the emissions junk on the 16 giving me trouble and gunking up my engine. Basically decided to buy it for the warranty. Stupid decision/good decision? I will be driving it every day, contractor, will be towing some with it. I take care of my truck but I don't baby it at all. Is there a huge difference between the performance of those 2 years? Just sold my 2016 F350 to a friend and doing this purchase this week.
Thx

I would buy the 2016 for the same price. It is 4 years newer, has a warranty and less miles. The emissions system on the 16 is actually easier on the engine than the 12. It is the pre-DEF models where the EGR gunks up the engine. I would double check the trans on the 16. The Aisin is only available on the 3500. The 2500 will have the 68RFE.

There were more hard to resolve issues on the 12.The 16 will give better power and economy. The oil change interval is much improved on the 16.

The most important thing to do is drive it like a truck. Get on the highway from time to time and GO. Put a heavy trailer behind that truck and GO. If you use it like a grocery getter, you are much more likely to have problems with the exhaust system. On the other hand, if you drive it like a truck and get temps up and haul weight and make the engine WORK, you are much less likely to have any issues with the exhaust.

The good news is, after your warranty is up, you can always rip all that stuff off if it gives you problems. I don't recommend it, but its always an option...

Buy the newer truck. Almost 40K on my 2016 with zero emission issues.

Definitely use my trucks for work. I'm a timber frame builder so I'm always towing and just generally working my truck. Never have a truck for grocery gettin.
Thx!

Having had both a 12 and now a 13 I would go with the DEF system truck. It runs way better and the lube oil stays much cleaner. Just have the dealer/ Seller run the truck through the shop and have all the software, SRC and track bar recalls/ updates done. I wouldn't worry too much about the water pump recall that all the GEN 4 trucks seem to have they don't have known good repair parts available just yet. Having driven my friends 17 I like the way the steering fells over the 13 better more positive controll

You will not regret the 16. I have a 15 3500 with Aisin. I am also a contractor and use my truck for pulling our job site trailer. I have had zero problems in 27,000 miles with this truck. I use it to travel over 100 miles each way to different jobs at times. I have also spent months driving only a 100 yard round trip. Neither commute has thrown any codes or given me any issues.
As you probably know it is hard to project how close or far the next job will be.
If the 16 is a 2500 it does not have the Aisin. I am on the fence with the 68rfe. I was on my third transmission when i got rid of my 14 at 15,000 miles. It was stock just schizophrenic and consumed itself.

If the 2012 isn't deleted, ( if it still has an O2 sensor, EGR, DPF, etc, ), get the 2016.

If the 2012 is deleted, I would go that way with what you may need to pull.

Look for a newer 3500 with AISIN. Dipstick on right!!!

Get the 16 Much less EGR. Easier on the engine better fuel mileage. EGR clean out every 60, 000 over double with DEF.
