Ok, just drove the new toy (empty)from Portland (tax-free & $48 registration) to Phoenix this weekend and I am in need of reassurance.

I was getting 18+ mpg on the little runs I did around Portland. Usually 60-70 mph. I got the same untill Sacramento. At which point she droped to 14mpg for the last 800 miles. UGH!!

I was running 70-75mph with a 15-20 mph head wind. Is that enough to cut me by 4mpg? If I can get 20mpg now at 70mph, when it breaks-in should it get better at 80mph??? I was lovin' it untill that drive... .

Jeff
P. S. The power was good though. It's scary having the cruise on 75mph and blowing by people up hills #ad

SandDemon, You will get 14 to 18 MPG for a while. maybe even up to 15,000 miles. then one day poof your milage will be at 18 to 20 MPG. My last dodge got 20MPG (the current onwner is getting 25 MPG at sea level) now my new dodge gets 14. 5 MPG with only 3000 miles on it at approx. 1300 feet elevation. my first take full was 16 MPG and I have been getting 14 MPG while towing. Beats me!!! I can't wait till it has 10,000 plus miles on it. Good luck. #ad

Head winds will eat fuel like you cant believe. 75 mph and 20mph headwind is like driving at 95 mph = no fuel mileage

I had the same feeling until I really thought about my situation. I live at 2000 feet above sea level, and any time I have to leave my house, I basically drop down to sea level, where I have to run my errands. The climb from sea level to my house is around 8 miles. this means about a 5% grade I do this sometimes 2-3 times a day, and I usually get around 16. 5 mpg on a 5000 mile truck. When I do this with a gasser, I get at most 10mpg and the trip is not near as fast. So I am happy with what I get. To me, this is probably the most fuel efficient truck around. I know two guys with 2wd powerstrokes that live nearby and they only get 14mpg. Just my $. 02 worth.

Sand Demon- don't worry sounds like you got some of california's enviro diesel #ad
but your milage will get better-----my 99 got better milage on Az or or diesel---

SandDemon, your mileage will be very consistent around the Phoenix area. Unloaded I average 16-20, depending on how I drive. The faster I go down the Interstate, the lower the mileasge, though.
If I stay under 75, the mileage is best. Once I push 80 and above, it does go down slightly.
I made a trip this past summer to Greer and back, and drove the speed limit most of the way there and back, and recorded my best mileage, 20. 5.
In December, I drove to Long Beach and back for DieselFest and with an average speed of 85, my mileage average was 15. This is calculated, not by any trip computer, since I don't have one.

You should be so lucky to get 14 or 18, when we switched to winter fuel here in AK my mileage went from 16-19 down to 12-13 and as low as 10. This is all around sea level.
