When I bought my ‘18 in Washington they sent me on my with without collecting Washington sales tax and with a 3 day plate. Because the vehicle was financed they collected Idaho sales tax and when the title/paperwork was mailed to the Idaho DMV it had a check for the tax included. Had I paid cash for the truck I would have left without paying sales tax and just paid it upon registering.. which is what happened when I bought my 5th wheel in Utah. Cash, and no tax collected in Utah.

Yes, our truck was a cash deal also. So that is probably why ours was handled the way it was.

Well I guess you never lived in Comifornia, why do you think I got the hell out of that hell hole. Yes, it is sales tax and taxable as a large property. No different than a car or boat, you want to register it in Comifornia, they want a sales reciept. Whats the difference between credit or cash when it pertains to the State of Comifornia. With a boat, you not only pay sales tx. after purchase, they concider it real property and you get a annual bill from the County Treasurer as property tx..

What does buying in Oregon have to do with Cali? You don’t pay sales tax in any state if you won’t be registering it there.

All states that have sales tax will charge you sales tax on the purchase of a vehicle/trailer upon registering it, regardless of where purchased. The State you bought it in will on charge sales tax for that state if 1) the state has sales tax, and 2) the vehicle/trailer will be immediately registered in that state and not another.

Had you bought that AF trailer in a sales tax state the outcome would have been the same. No sales tax by the selling state and sales tax by the registered state.

Where do you think he'll register his truck, unless were not getting the whole story OR I missed the fact he'll register in another State. I know Nevada has a law about that, you are given a specific period of time to transfer your plates over to Nevada or get fined, if you have residency in Nevada. I'm sure there are loop holes, but I didn't get the jest of the OP registering it in another state, other than Comifornia.

Arizona's system is a bit convoluted, and in some cases they will collect tax, depending on their agreement with the state in question. Also, just marking the Buyer's Order "delivered out of state" does not cut the mustard, and requires a notarized Bill of Lading at the destination. I know dealers who were burned for playing fast and loose with this.

I agree, it can be a grey area. When I bought my grader and John Deere out of state I hired them hauled, no tax. When I bought my tub grinder and Case/IH, I picked them up, no tax, but I think they should have taxed me. When I bought my new Cummins for my Ford in El Paso, I picked it up. They gave me a "delivered out of state" invoice.

When I buy my trailers out of state, I pick them up, no tax. However, when I register in AZ I pay state tax, no city or county tax, so I save 3%.

Yes, I went out of state to buy my wife's car in 2012, due to the sleazy PHX dealers, and when I titled it here MVD collected the "Use Tax", which is the base rate.

1999 to 2003, I was stationed at Andrew's AFB, MD and living there, but retained my residency in TX. In August 2002, I purchased a new 2002 Ram 3500 in MD, registered it in MD, and paid MD sales tax. I got promoted, moved to Laughlin AFB TX in March 2003. When tags were expiring, I went to get TX tags and had to pay additional TX sales tax, the difference between the lower MD sales tax and the higher TX sales tax. I was pretty surprised about this calculation between the states.

Just remember, the taxman always gets his money.

Cheers, Ron

That base rate discount can pay for all travel expenses, when considering a $70K truck. I did get somewhat of a break when I purchased my C&C in 07, the B&W bed was not included in the purchase of the truck, I purchased the bed in Kansas and had it installed there.

In May 2009, I purchased my 2009 Ram 4500 crew cab 4x4 84"CA on Ebay with J&M tow body, B&W Campanion 5th wheel, wheel simulators, and spare tire, and free oil changes for 3 years/36K miles all out the door for around $600 less than the MSRP of the truck itself. I had them include the TX state sales tax in the price, so they cut me a check for the sales taxes for when I registered it back inTX. This was the best deal I ever made on a vehicle.

Cheers. Ron

I bought my new 18’ out of state September of 19’. I financed the balance after the trade in and told them I would pay the TTL. I wrote them a check for the fees and they sent me a check with the paperwork. With it being this easy, I’ll never buy a vehicle locally if I can get a better deal elsewhere. First time in my life I have been offered extra money over the amount of the vehicle when financing. Must have been a good deal.
