Looking for advice from the board on a 1990 I just found in the paper in Central Oregon.

The ad reads:

LE350 1 ton, 5 speed, 4X4, loaded. One owner, well maintained, 191K miles. New steel canopy opens on 3 sides, Braden 8000 lb. commercial winch in custom grill guard, exhaust brake, tow package, bed liner and mat, steering stabilizers, gas shocks, spotlights, AM/FM Cassette. $10,000.

This is a photo ad. It looks like a steel GEM top or the like. The last I checked prices, a new canopy with side doors was worth at least $2000 alone. Anyone ever heard of that brand of winch? Was this year intercooled? I assume this would be a 160 hp motor?

I am more familiar with the 1994 and newer trucks, and in fact I had a 2001 on order until the order got canceled in June. I am now thinking this older first Gen. looks like a heck of a deal. Any comments? What should I look for as far as high maintenance items? What will need to be replaced at 191K, if it has not been replaced yet?

Waiting for a call back from the owner. Any and all comments appreciated.

Thanks,

Shelby

Shelby,
I will concentrate on what I've had experience with as my truck is similar to the one you are looking at and I've looked at some like that with many more miles. The truck came factory without an intercooler and 160 hp. Some things that I've needed to replace were a vacuum pump (not sure why) and I needed to rebuild the front axle. The front axle was due to a lack of grease by the original owner even with only 65,000 miles. The miles aren't a big deal as much as the maintenance. I would also listen for noises in the transmission, especially in 5th gear. As far as money goes, it is worth as much as you are willing to pay for it. Hope this little bit helps.
Matt

Thanks Matt. I also got a couple of e-mail replies, all good advice. The TDR members are a great group. As far as the truck goes, I think it must have sold, as the owner did not return my phone call.
