I have a 96 12 valve, 5spd and want to upgrade to a newer truck. The '06 has 92000 miles on it, is completely stock and looks to be in excellent shape, from the internet pictures.

What are the problems with these new ones? My 12 valve has been 100% reliable and I'm looking for the same in a newer one. Any thoughts.

additional information. the '06 looks like it was just a driver. It's a shortbed, quadcab, doesn't have any extra hitches or anything. doesn't look like it was a work truck.

The biggest problem with the 06 is the auto.

My '06 2500 CTD 2-wheel drive with auto transmission has 101,000 miles on it. Have the PSM intake mods and Smarty S06 for at least the last 60000 miles - no issues with the drivetrain to date. I do not abuse the 48RE with boosted launches, which would not accomplish anything anyway due to item 1. below.

Check your potential truck for:

1. With the AAM rear axle, check to make certain it has that version of positraction, LSD or whatever term they have hung on it. Believe it or not, DC, in their infinite wisdom, actually produced a number of these trucks with OPEN differentials - I ended up with one. Yep, why a 3/4 ton HD truck with the torque monster Cummins (all supposedly intended for towing) would be sent out the gate with essentially one-wheel dive is beyond me... . Yep, the situation can be corrected, but at a cost.

2. Check the A/C system - the year models around '06 are notorious for having the blend door coming unglued. Can be a DIY fix, but plan on a weekend to do something that DC should have taken care of - regardless of warranty, since this is potentially a safety issue in that the de-fogging capability of the system is greatly reduced when this failure occurs. Shame that someone is the TDR membership with the right legal know-how has not pulled CTD owners together on this and several other issues over the years to hit DC with a class-action lawsuit to correct such problems. Search the TDR forums, somewhere there is a good pictorial of the repair process.

3. If the fuel-filler (non) vent issue has not been fixed, be prepared to take forever to fill up the tank, or to install the vent-fix kit promoted by a TDR member. Again -search the forums for a link to this one.

4. While under the truck checking out the vent-filler deal, check to see if the vents on top of the fuel tank have had after-market filters installed. There is an issue with the fuel vents being left un-capped on the diesel trucks and open to the air, which allows moisture & dirt to be drawin into the fuel tank when driving in the rain, or on muddy roads. I believe there is a TSB out for this, and the previous owner may have had this taken care of already. If not - plan on doing it - problem shows up when water-in-fuel filter is indicated on the dash. It is a pretty simple DIY-fix - about 2' of 3/8" fuel tubing, several 3/8" clamps and two small inline fuel filters worked fine on mine.

Actually, other than the issues mentioned, the '06 has been as reliable a truck as I expect.

My previous truck was a massaged '99 2500 CTD two-wheel drive with 5-spd standard and 307,500 miles on it which I was in the process of building into a (at least) 12 second daily driver. Unfortunately, it came to an untimely demise thanks to a wayward 12x35" rear tire/brake drum/axle stub assembly that broke off a 4x4 Furd going the opposite way on the interstate and landed about 30 ft in front of me. At 75 mph, and with an 18-wheeler in the next lane, believe me - hitting/runnning over that can make for an exciting ride. I walked away - thanks to the good Lord, 3/4 ton truck chassis & weight of the Cummins which kept the truck from going over the concrete median barrier and into on-coming traffic. I am forever thankful for choosing to drive such a vehicle in the heavy interstate traffic around Houston, TX. Any less vehicle, and I feel certain I would not be here to write this memo.

I disagree...

the 48RE is a decent transmission if you don't go crazy w/ the mods... and it can be built up to whithstand a lot of power.

the biggest problem with the 06 is the same biggest problem with all common rail trucks... the injection system. the 12v is 100% reliable and if you get trash in an injector, it'll stumble, maybe white smoke a little, but it'll get you home, and you can put a new set of injectors in it for a few hundred bucks.

if you get trash in a CR injector, at best you're looking at a grand or so to pull them, get them tested, fix one of them, etc. at worst you're looking at a melted piston and or washed bearings.

but, even with the fears of CR injection sensitivity, I'm on my 3rd CR truck and I love it.

actually... my biggest complaint about my '06 is the SEATS!!!! one of the 3rd gen trucks I've owned have had comfortable seats, but the '06 is the worst. I did the foam and carpet mod, and it's helped, but the thing really just needs some different (better) seats in it. I'm exploring my options there :(

you'll love the truck, you won't believe how well it'll run with just like a little tow program on it.

one thing I will say is don't pay too much for that truck! I almost bought an '06 Mega Cab 2wd auto SLT with 57k on it. I had it down to 17k. I think you're looking at about a $12k truck right there

the only problem I have had with my 06 is injectors. the first one went at 55k and i had been stock up to that point and changed filters ever 15k , after that i started playing with mp-8 box that can add a lot of pressure and i'm sure that didn't help the next couple injectors that went bad. I have a set of flux 2. 5s now and love it. I would stongly recomend something like a airdog or fass system aswell. as for the trans its pretty good. I can slip mineif i'm not careful with my foot and my settings btu its generaly not till i'm at the 200hp over stock and being stupid. with just the injectors or when i had a smarty jr set at 100 it never missed a beat.

thanks all for the detailed information. this helps emensely. Mayby some of the s. tx fellas know of the dealer that has the truck: Discount Motor down in Corpus. Anyone have any dealings with them?

Grizzly I know that a lot of the Hot Shot haulers seem to prefer a standard transmission. Please enlighten me on reasons.

I am considering swapping trucks and want to do it correctly.

Paul

I understand that the new trucks with the new 6 speed standard transmission are good for heavy hauling, however the 48RE may require some torque converter work depending on how heavy you haul. I've never had an automatic, so I really don't know what one has to do to make them better. I most likely will never have an automatic because I prefer a standard. One reason is that clutches cost less then repairing an automatic and also on a standard whatever gear you put it in, it will stay there until you take it out and it will not slip.

I took my '06 to Goerend to rebuild the transmission because I couldn't stand how slippery it felt. At 35,000 miles, the trans itself looked like brand new, but when they cut the converter in half, it was TOAST! I probably could have gotten by with just a new torque converter from them, but I plan on really pushing this truck, so I went all out and had them do everything. Best money spent so far!! Totally different truck!! I tell everybody if I had to buy another truck, I would drive it straight to their shop and have them work their magic, even if it had 2 miles on it, seriously!
