I am looking to purchase a used third gen 4x4 diesel. What is the best years to look at? I have been told the late 2005s, but then like anything esle people have issues with them. The only reason I am changing trucks from the 2001 is I need the room in the back seat. (grandchildren)

I value your experience and opinions.

'05

I am biased, but I would go with a '05. If you like the 6 speed, early '05s have the NV5600. The liftpump is in the tank where it belongs:)-{}). You get the 5. 9 cummins without early EGR and DPF issues of the 6. 7 (again :-{}).

I too am biased to the 05's. I like the 03-05 interior the best, and the seats are nicer as well. 05 has the 325 motor, and you can pick from 3 trans (48RE, G56, NV5600).

03-04 are more emissions free but also don't have the upgraded head of 04. 5+ so its all a trade-off.

06-07 are already EFI Live compatible if that's a concern, but a Smarty works on all of them.

03-04, But as stated before thats personal opinion. I do know that my 2001 Quad cab had as much room as the 03+ quad cabs. There might be a little more room in my 03 but not much. If your looking for more room might I suggest a MEGA CAB.

I do know that my 2001 Quad cab had as much room as the 03+ quad cabs.

The rear cab has quite a bit more room on a 3rd gen than a 2nd gen, about 5" more (~15%). The 3rd gen still isn't a full crew cab, but its much better than a 2nd gen.

MY05, just about the best trade off for good parts, power, reliability, etc. From the engine persepctive had the better valves and valve seats, the electronics had most of the issues worked out, had the most power and TQ in the 5. 9 series.

Early 05 had the NV5600 with no DMF, probably the best manual option available. However, plastic end tanks on the CAC's need a hard look and possible replacement. The late 05's fixed the CAC back to metal but then the DMF and G56 were the only manuals available. The NV had a btter OD ratio at . 73 than the G56 at . 79. With the standard 3. 73 gears the G56 was a heavy toter and not a real good DD unless you want to go with 35" tires or regear.

The drive train from tcase back was about the same on all the models 04-07. MY03 had some issues with diffs and QC that was fixed by 04. The early engines were not as powerful and problems with valves and seats. That again was fixed by the time the 600 series engine came out.

The 04. 5+ turbos are much better, comparatively, thean the previous years. Full 4" exhaust with a CAT that does not generate much back pressure.

The 05+ autos all replaced the TV cable with a motor. Trade off is they were more sensitive to light footed driving styles. All the 48RE's are a good heavy trans with the 05+ models fully capable of using an EB. OD ratio of . 69 makes it excellent for DD and towing to the GCVW. Coupled with a slightly larger tire they are pretty efficient.

The 06 models introduced the TIPM which can be a problem for people who pull trailers a lot. Very easy to burn out a circuit and require a $700+ fix to get blinkers and other circuits back on line. The 05 and older models still had a seperate FCM and PDC that could be serviced independently. They also seemed a lot more tolerant of loads from trailers and their wiring problems.

The 06. 5+ switch to CAN bus for communications. Enter increased cluster controller failures, ECU problems, and just plain weird electrical glitches. If there is one insurmountable problems on 06+ its the TIPM and CAN bus. The auto transmissions and the DMF seem to be much more prone to problems in these trucks. A supplier or engineering spec was changed that just did not enhance the life of the drive train.

The room in any of the 3rd gen quad cabs is superior to 2nd gen quad cab, without a doubt. It is possible for an adult to ride relatively comfortable in the 3rd gens where it was not that great in a 2nd gen. Children and teenagers have no issues and the 4 doors are a big bonus.

COME ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!! You guy's know that the 04. 5 is the best WHY YOU ASK because that's what I HAVE

Nah, You only gots a measly 600, weun's got 610 in our 5's!!

Not to mention a REAL tow\haul transmission control. :D

Excellent overview cerberusiam, thank you.

Thanks, I thought maybe a certain model of the '05. I have an '05 auto and was told many times it could not have an EB due to computer issues.

Yeah, I know. It wasn't an outright lie but it was far from the truth. The transmission is fully capable, no difference from the 06's. The ugly truth is Dodge would not retro the computer to handle their factory installed brake becuase they want to sell new trucks. Therefore, their position was it could not use an EB when the real truth a PAC or BD brake works fine with the supplied controller.

Dodge would not warranty it so it was not possible in their eyes. Total BS from the start. ;)

The drawback to the 05 is the tow haul function and lack of a over drive off function with the auto. Easily overcome with the BD od lock out. Which works very well. I to dislike the later interiors. The 03-04 seem to get better mpg. If I was to go manual I may prefer the g-56 for the only other reason is that 1st and R are in line and I would ditch the dmf.

Guys, I really appreicate all the very valuable information. From your responses the 05 would be my best bet. I do not tow very much, but I do a lot of highway miles. Carseats do not work well in the 2nd gens.

According to my observation, hanging out at three different diesel truck forums for the last two month, plus I owned one since last December, it looks like the '05 has much less problems than the others years.

My two cents.
