I'm speaking on behalf of my friend from town here in Novato,CA... {who doesn't have his password yet} "Intenz Blu" who just picked up his 2001. 5 intense blue 4x4 quad-cab short bed 6-speed HO Cummins tonight. After being on special order for 3 months. I think we may have a record for the lowest miles on a rig yet for taking the silencer ring out. . 30 miles exactly..... lemme hear you're guys' stories about how quick you took them out at! AND OH WOW what a difference!Boy what a SWEEEEET truck that is!

I took it out and two days later put it right back in. Everyone says the whine was too much. I didn't hear any whine and noticed no difference in operation. I put it back in because I don't want the dealer to have any reason for not doing waranty work on the truck.

Just my opinion after having it out for a couple of days.

And by the way congradulations to your friend on his recent aquisition.

I drove my truck from the lot to the nearest truck stop, fueled up and removed the ring. 18 miles on the odo. With that and the straight pipe exhaust (less than 24 hours later) I love the sound, wouldn't have it any other way.

Removed mine for about 2 hours. I liked the sound but I thought I lost some bottom end throttle response so I put it back in.

I took mine out and looked at the configureation. I could see no advantage to removeing the ring if anything it appeared to me that it would interrupt air flow to turbo. I put it right back in. That was on my 99, my ETH runs so good I'm leaving it alone.

Gotcha beat! 23. 2 miles. I'd been a member before I bought. Thats how I knew that since I tow'ed that I'd need the 5 speed.

Back to the subject matter. Came out at 23. 2 miles. Went back in at 600 miles.

Everyone said it was too loud . . most passengers said that it sounded like a 3/8" black & decker drill.

Since it didn't decrease my fuel consumption, and some felt it was a little too loud . . I put it back in.

Every one's gonna love it when I go 4" #ad

My . 02 cents

Back in the mid 80's, when The General came out with the TPI Camaros and Corvettes, the thing to do was by an "air straightener ", available from some TPI hot rod companies, and puy this in the opening of the throttle bodies..... This was supposed to clean up the air flow into the engine and increase driveability..... As much as I wpold like yo hear that turbo whine, I think the " air straightner" idea is what Cummings had in mind when they designed this part... Any ideas?

This topic has been beat to death. The only reason for the ring is to reduce turbo whine and was the result of a request from DC. The ring has no effect on any other phase of engine operation and is not included in engines supplied for other vehicles/purposes.

Schomer,

yours are the best comments yet on this subject!

I took out the ring on my '99 and had to listen to my wife complain about the noise that I could not even hear (hearing loss. . ). When I got the 2001 ETH--DEE I didnt even bother.

You guys that think a turbo silencer ring is for turbo silencing only, give this thread some thought: Schomer's Custom Silencer Ring
I believer proper air channelment can make a difference, all though the stock silencer ring doesn't come close to being very effective at channeling air efficiently.
