Bypass filter question

Am going to install a Amsoil single bypass filter. Did a search but didn't find a lot for the first gen trucks. Was wondering what are my options for installing the drain line. I saw drilling and tapping the valve covers(just installed new chrome covers so don't care much for this idea) or into the oil fill spout. Where on the spout is this done? Any other locations that can be used?



Thought I'd ask this, there are several of you that have them and I wanted to pull some of that experience. Can anyone E-mail pictures of their installation?

Stan, I have a single bypass(BE-90) mounted on the passenger side behind the wiper bottle next to the ac dryer.

I used to run the filtered oil back into the oil fill tube using a swivel fiting that amsoil sells.

I have sence modified the turbo oil return tube for returning the filtered oil. This way both oil lines to the bypass filter are near each other and the return line is not so long and it's not going across the top of the engine.

I'll take some photos and post them in the next couple of days.

Just to provide another option, I use a Frantz bypass filter, and punched a hole up high in the side of the pan with a SHARP punch (no metal shavings that way!), then threaded a self-tapping hollow machine screw with a hose barb into it - that's the way Frantz did it for years, but MAN, are these Cummins pans thick!

Gene, I'm looking forward to seeing those pictures. Sounds like a nice clean way to install.



Gary, I would be afraid to punch a hole in the pan. I'm sure it looks and works just fine but everytime I try something like that it turns into a big bust, and then I get real mad .



Anyone else have any methods to do this?

Many of the guys on the VW TDI list use a hollow drain plug to return the oil to the pan. Just drill and tap it to accept one of the 1/4" NPT fittings that comes with the Amsoil BMK-11 kit and you have a nice neat return option. This gets the filtered oil directly back into the oil pan, which is what you want ... .



I've never been able to bring myself to use the self tapping, hollow bolt that Amsoil includes in their kits. I'm sure it works fine if you get a good clean punch hole, but it would seem hard to keep it from leaking just a bit?

Thanks a bunch. I really like the installation, is nice and clean. What type of fitting is that? you said something about a swivel fitting from Amsoil - is that the fitting you used to modify the return line or is the fitting a brass one soldered into place?



Where did the oil lines come from? Custom made?



Thanks for the view of the fender - at first the filter looked hard to get at but then one of the other pics showed it to be above the washer res.



At least if I screw this up it is easy to replace the line compared to the pan.
