C Series Repower Finished

Attention: TDR Forum Junkies

Thanks, TDR Staff

Look what the Dodge drug home!

5.9 cummins for $2500?

Noise: Just a tick louder at idle than a B, under load the turbo whine is a lot more evident

Fuller ratio: Most overdrive 9 speeds have a 0. 73 to 1 OD. Check out the Fuller website for service manuals and transmission info.

Bombing: I can handle most of it myself. I am an ex-Cummins Mechanical Development Engineer.

Rear Axle: Ford 10. 25 diameter ring gear, 3. 55 ratio.

Cruising Speed: Top gear, 70 mph is 1750 rpm.

Gauages: Speedometer, Tach, water temp, oil pressure, oil temp, fuel pressure, fuel level, egt boost, voltmeter, air pressure, transmission temp, and something else - I forget.

Exhaust is a 6"

hmmm with that much torque in an 9000# truck... who needs more?

I would love to take it for a test drive Oo.

The truck actually weighs 7980 lbs with full fuel and driver. Front axle: 4680 lbs. Rear axle: 3300 lbs.

Right now the engine is governed at 2500 rpm. I could change the governor springs or simply tighten them in for a little increase.

How much did it weigh before the conversion?

The 4680 is not a whole lot heavier than my dodge. I think it weighs about 7600#.

Don't remember the split. . I have a weigh slip at home.

Hey C-Series,

Could you by any chance get me some engine #'s, CPL's, etc. Finding a used 8. 3 is not too hard. Finding the right 8. 3 with the HP #'s is my problem. If I do a swap, I want to start with about the same motor and pump you have. Does the 8. 3 have 12 or 13mm plungers in the pump from the factory or are they smaller?

I would be very interested in what pump that thing has on it. Is it a 913? What plungers and cam? I am also interested in what mileage that thing gets.

Is your speedo correct? I have the same rear end ratio, and a . 69:1 overdrive, and I am at 2000 rpm at 70. What size are your tires? How high of rpm can an 8. 3 safely run?

Very cool!!! Good job!!

Chris :D :D

C-Series-Man,

That is a great looking conversion. I can't believe with that more power would be needed given those HP and torque numbers. :--):D :D

Congratulations

C-Man, congratulations on your project! I've been waiting over a year to see this finished. I won't ask any questions since you will be busy enough answering all of the ones you have.

With those kinds of numbers, I can't see why you would want to bomb it. Just Truly awesome!

C-Man , Congrats on one heck of a job well done ! I'm thinkin' knock those Ford emblems off and go for Peterbuilt , (aren't they oval also) anyway , without a doubt , you are deffinetly a craftsman and a A-1 fabricator . Nice jobOo.

Uh Yeah, the speedometer is correct. It is an aftermarket custom calibration gauge. Basically you calibrate it by driving a certain distance, in my case 2 miles, and the gauge counts the number of pulses it sees from a Hall Effect sensor. Now that the gauge knows how many pulses per mile the sending unit outputs, it can determine you speed by counting the number of pulses per second. As a double check, if you do the math, At 70 mph or 6760 ft/min, with a 36 in tire, that yields 720. 8 tire revolutions per minute, times the rear end ratio of 3. 55 and overdrive ratio of 0. 73 (still with me? ), all that boiled down comes to 1867 rpm at 70 mph. The 17 rpm difference from the before mentioned 1850 rpm at 70 mph is either gauge error or the fact the tire diameter grows as the speed increases.

How high can you turn a C? I have witnessed a C turning over 4500 rpm for an extended period of time. I am not going to try that. Personally, my big atraction to diesels (which I have made a career of) is low rpm power. Why run hard when you can walk and get the same job done. I used to have a 429 gas burner in this truck. It was a screamer but it lacked the low end grunt power that only a diesel can give. I have always wanted a diesel pickup and can't afford a new one :{ , so I did what I could - build one.

Why a Ford? I have always been a Ford guy. I had the truck already and grown attached to it. Now I have the best of both worlds (in my humble opinion), the truck I like and a kick butt engine.

Any more questions? :)

That 9 speed have sincro's?

I wanna know what mileage that thing gets too when you can get some accurate numbers.

How long does it take to warm up? What are the typical ambient temps?

I'm laughing at US!

Bombing this puppy is like putting firecrackers on a "Nuke". I guess we're all the same when it comes to leaving something stock. Outstanding job, and thank you for sharing this project with us!

My 9-speed is not synced. I like the driving without having to clutch, just watch the tach. The C will warm up to operating temperature just like the B.

C's

very nice. i'm jealous. not really, but i know you must be proud of it, and should be. i've not turned my 92 C 8. 3 up any. what can i do that is simple and won't affect the durability? i think that with the inter cooler and pump setup i have, it is rated at 275 HP, and don't remember the torque? in a 25,000 lb motorhome.

You can turn up the C-series just like you turn up anything with a P7100 injection pump. The only difference is how the C will respond to the added fuel, which will be above and beyond the B... . but that's a given.

VERY nice setup... . can't wait to see how it works out for you, but from the sounds of it you're tickled pink already.

Anyone who has found a C - let me know, I've been looking and all I have found are NTC's, KTA's, etc... nothing smaller than 11 liters... which is too big for my next project. Drop me a PM... . please.

Also, is the bellhousing the same on the B & C?

rolling redneck residence

yeah, matt, i like it. i wonder what constraints the Allison MD3060 put on turning up the power on the C. it's bone stock now. no drag racer, but the way the 3060 is geared, turning 1750 at 85 MPH, and governed at 2200... ... 120 MPH in a motorhome????not me!! doubt those big michelins are made for that speed.

120mph in a rolling house would be a sight to see, that's for sure... .

Just get a J. A. T. O. rocket or three... . and then.....

You know the rest. :D
