NV4500 3rd gear syncro - need info

Chevy 93 4x4 Conversion

I'm planning on putting an 8. 3L cummins c-series engine in a 3500 dually. I can't decide on which transmission I should use. I don't know very much about which transmissions would be available to use with the 8. 3 and I'm not sure if any companies make adapters to go to the 6 speed dodge transmission. (I doubt it) I already have the engine, and a perspective truck. Regardless if I get this truck or not, I will use a 2nd generation Ram for the conversion. Any comments or advice on which transmission to use will be greatly appreciated.

A few years ago there was a guy that stuffed a 8. 3 into a ford crew cab. I thought his name was something like "c series man", you might do a search possibly in the conversions threads. I thought he used a eaton/fuller??? It was a 4wd and it really turned out pretty well.

I don't think you want to mess with the Dodge transmission, it's too small for the 8. 3. I would use the sae#2 bellhousing, the factory size for the 8. 3. keep in mind this housing is big, you will need to do a body lift. Eaton makes 5,6,and 7 speed trannys, sized for this engine. Also, use at least the 14" clutch, the 14" twin disk Spicer is cheap, powerful and easy to find. If you don't mind slow shifting, an Eaton 10 speed will make an awesome combo. Is this conversion a 4x4?

Is an 8. 3L too big and too heavy for a 3500?

It isn't that much bigger. But add the extra weight of the oversized transmission etc. and it will be a good bit heavier. I appreciate all the comments. The only thing is: It's gonna have to be a daily driver. I'm gonna use it to haul wheat, peanuts, cotton etc. and I want my girlfriend to be able to drive it!

Yeah it's gonna be 4x4. Kinda. well 10X10. I'm gonna have a tandem dually.

Not 10x10. You don't count the number of tires. The first number, is the total number of axle shafts. The second number, is the number of powered axle shafts. You would have a 6x4.

Does anyone have dimensions for the 8. 3? How much do they weigh? I have a f-450 that would make a sweet donor :-laf

Thanks

Ok, but wouldn't that be 6X6?

Allison 5 speed MT654CR transmissions

Some of our military-series (M-Series) vehicles run the 8. 3Liter Cummins NHC-250 or 6CTA 8. 3L diesel engine with Allison 5 speed MT654CR transmissions. They have a divorced transfer case behind the transmission and run Rockwell Axels in a 6x6 configuration. I'm not sure on the bell housing diameter of the Allison and it probably will require you to do a body lift or custom floor pan.

I was planning to use the stock dana 80 and a donor axle. I'm probably gonna use this configuration:#ad

That thing looks cool, but I doesn't look like it contains a power divider. I think the proper term is an interaxle differentual, the thingy semis have. It lets the front and rear wheels turn at different speeds, a nice feature to have when cornering, or tires with slightly different diameters. Just something to look into. I think it would be similar to driving around in 4WD.

Yeah, I was thinking about putting a rear axle disconnect on it, but the guys at usa 6X6 didn't recommend it. They say that the benefits would be small compared to the cost and hastle.
