Competition Raced a porsche cayenne turbo!!

I got a call from someone yesterday saying the VTPA got a letter from the CARB(Ca. Air Research Board) stating they have to cease all diesel pulling events-in the letter was a picture of a smoker tractor at a Cal Poly event-I'm not sure this pertains to trucks or the smoker tractors and at which events and if it's at certain venues(state owned land)--The only thing I found on the CARB site was that offroad diesel engines and vehicles were coming under some scrutiny to clean up---and vehicles with 93-98 engines are supposed to do something also, but this was big rigs, buses, etc... . no mention of Dodge, Ford or Chevy pickups---will keep you all posted--chris

So when are they gonna start clamping down on NASCAR races in California? Don't recall seeing catalytic convertors on a race car. OH wait, NASCAR brings millions of dollars to the state ecomony, what was I thinking?

CARB needs to lighten up. And you guys in California wonder why your gas is so much more than anywhere else.

And to think I asked for another tour here :( One of the major reasons I did ask for another tour here was the friends and fun that I enjoy at the pulls and other diesel related events. Being in the Coast Guard for 23 years now it is very rare that you get a chance to get involved in something that brings you closer to the community, and when you finally do its time to transfer again. Usally the military folks just hang out with other military folks. Here I have become heavily involved in the sport and love it, I have a great time and can intereact with those in the comunities in wich these events take place. I asked to be transferred to a unit only 30 minutes from were I am now, and recieved the orders last month, I am excited as it allows me to stay here with the friends I have made and continue sled pulling. Now this crap comes along, what a total bummer, I am not getting to excited about this as of yet since we don't have a whole lot of facts. but if I can't sled pull, I am going to be ******. Its bad enough I have to pay 6 or 7 times more money for a house, and 50 cents more a gallon for gas then the national average and now this SHEET !!!!! And they wonder why people are leaving CA at alarming rates. Go figure. If those goes through, make room for me back on the East Coast were I did my first 20 years.

This blows #@$%!... pun intended... next thing we'll find out is we can't FART without a catalitic convertor!!! Now wonder my in-laws are moving to Seattle where the can move from CA and buy a house there WITHOUT a payment. What's wrong with this picture? California is going to drive THEMSELVES right into the ground with this CR*P!!!

We need to get more info on what exactly is going on, and what can be done about.

If it is as bad as it looks, we need to organzie every branch of motorsports we can think of, competitor and spectator alike, from every state, and start beating on lawmakers doors.

Smoker tractors today, NASCAR tomorrow.

It is up to us to fight it, if we sit by and complain and do nothing, or worse, LAUGH at the Californians, then we will have only ourselves to blame in the future.

Gene. . and exactly why I'm getting my conservative butt out of here

and you can say thanks to all the little bearucrats who do not seek election for the controls placed on WE the voters. . and that my friend is a pure result or our education system

"I wonder how many redneck Cali boys even vote?"... . well again there is the issue. . all states are experencing a huge loss of interest in voting do to voter apathy. . no facts here but guess no worse than any other state

It'll be a sad sad day when we can't do what we like without worrying about some EPA dork hiding behind a bush ready to give us a ticket for a little black smoke. If they are gonna be like that why don't they start going after trains, planes and ships. They all put TONS of emissions into the air! What I really don't understand is CA is cracking down... MN has gotten rid of emissions testing.....

Josh

Simple reason CA is cracking down, environmentalist and money. The Sierra Club and other organizations around here act like they have a ton of power when in fact they don't. But the thing is they end up scaring polital people and then they bend to them because they make the most noise. Theve been trying to close local beaches (sand dunes) because they think that ATV's and trucks make the sand shift too much. All they have to do it go out there when there is a 20 mph wind going through and see what moves more sand.

It would be nice to see the letter and exactly what it states--so we knew exactly who this affects now and what it will or can do to the future---also we need to see how the VTPA will react to the letter--there's no need to throw the cow chips in the fire yet, as only one person has talked with the VTPA president so far and sometimes first reactions are a little over the top, so I have my fingers crossed that the VTPA isn't shutting the diesel stuff down totally--hopefully we will have more info soon----chris

there's nothing in that ARB info that points to competition events or vehicles---but you can see they are starting to reel in the diesel vehicles---chris

I would love to move to Oregon if my wife didn't have such a GREAT job. We'll just see how this all pans out. I'm ready to go fighting. It's just getting ridiculous.

here's some more info from www.diesel-central.com ---

just about like I had it figured--a lot of talk with no real demand to shut down the diesel events--but what will the VTPA do is the real question--will they fight it(I hope so) or will they take the easy way out--I personally don't feel to confident, but if they don't fight it the CARB will then start to go after the gas vehicles I'd bet---

Well I got a copy of the letter today to both Tractor Associations, I have read it over and over and also went to the Safety and heath website to see what codes are in question.

This is only my opinion

There was a spectator that was at the event (it does not state who it was) but Some people do know, There was a picture that was takin of tractor smoking{ Emitting high concentrations of exhaust and exposing nearby spectators to these emissions}

now there are a couple of H&S codes involved also.

The one that seems to me that I might not agree with completely, Not saying I do not agree at all just completely is.

H&S Code 41700 No Person shall Discharge Pollutents

Except as otherwise provided in Section 41705, No person shall dicharge from any scource whatsoever such quantities of air contaminants or other material which cause injury, detriment nuisence or annoyance to any considerable number of persons or to the public, or which cause,or have a natural tendency to cause, injury or damage to bussiness or property.

Ok now what happens on the 4th of July every year for the last 227 years, and is bound to happen on the 4th of july this year.

H&S 41701 No Emissions Shall Exceed Ringelmann 2

Except as otherwis provided in section 41704, or Article 2 ( commening with section 41500) of this chapter other thn Section 41812, or Article 2 ( commencing with section 42350) of chapter 4, no person shall discharge into the atomoshere from any scource whatsoever any air contaminants other then uncombined water vaper, for a period or periods more then three minutes in any on hour which is

(A) as dark or darker in shade as that designated as NO. 2 on the Rinelmann Chart, as published by the United States Bureau of Mines, or (b) of such opacity as to obscure and observer's view to a degree equal to or greater then does smoke decribed in subdivision (A)

Ok I have seem some video, and it states no long then 3 mins of smoke

Warm up 1 min

Pull up to 20 sec.

Cool down 0 to 45 sec

Now obcure the observers view, Unless he or she has a pit pass and has sign the WAIVER that states that Whom ever is putting on the show is not responsible for personal injury and or damage needs to be in the assigned area for viewing, Which in almost all cases is in a realitvely safe and controlled area, grand stands

this letter does state this

( We hereby REQUEST that you DIRECT your association members to immediately cease and desist from modifying their engines resulting in these excessive emissions)

It goes on to say

Our objective is to work cooperatively with you and your associations to: gain Voluntary compliance so we can avoid and formal action.

Then it states some other things ab out the history of diesel fuel and the exhaust and there findings and what toxicing that diesel fuel puts into the air and goes on to state thing on prop 65 and TAC

On thing it says ( Diesel fuel is also a major source of particuiate pollution in CA, 94% of diesel emissions are estimated to be fine particles, less then 2. 5 microns in diameter that can bypass respiratory defense mechanisms and lodge deep in the lungs.

on the last page is says

Its not intent to outrail tractor pulls as a sporting event, We are vary concerned about the unnessary diesel engine over-fueling praticed by a FEW members of your organiztion, We have observed the high emitting tractors on your web sitts and at events like ... ..... ( I left that blank) This over fueling does not increase the power developed by the engines: instead, it creates gross amounts of toxic air contaminants resulting in the immediate toxic exposure to the spectators. W chailenges the vary talanted tchicians and engineers participating in these events to use their skills to compete with powerful but low emitting engines (i. e. engines need to stay within the manufacurer's specifications) This is possible, as demonstrated by the many tractors that successfully compete in these events without emitting gross amounts of visible air pollution.

Please direct your association members to take immediate and decisive action to prevent this toxic exposure, caused by a few rogue participants with gross emitting engines, to the spectators of your events.

I know I think I just opened a big can of worms here but I think you all needed to see the truth on this letter, and I'm sue some of you will say if you can handle the smoke then do go see the tractor pulls and I agree with you it is a free counrty but, There is coming a time when the clamp down is going to happen, I think its time to unite together ans one and somehow com to a comon ground on this as we all love pulling and would hate to see it go away.

IMO only

H&S Code 41700 No Person shall Discharge Pollutents ... ... ... ... ..... Now thats funny!I guess hormel chille will be shut down soon. :D
