Bug Out and ackermanN,

I brought my truck back to California from a project I was doing in Montana. Someone on this thread gave me a heads up that there is a weight break in the California registration: Over 7000# costs more and you have to provide a certified weight sheet to register.

I removed the spare tire, all tools and junk, and ran the tank down so that the warning light was on: Certified weight 6940# (without me)

Something to consider.

Ahh but 6940lbs will require smog in 2010 if we are reading the info correctly

GVWR on door sticker is 9000#... California requires a true weight sticker when you bring a truck in from out of state. I hope I didn't condem myself to smog inspection by getting the certified weight below 7000#.....

CA already has unique blends

Bajabob,
You miss the point! One of the advantages of paying the premium price here in California is the less wear and tear on our vehicles from the well maintained roadways!:) How long before California also adds 'beautique' (sp?) diesel to go along with the California unique gasoline blend?

When I take over, I will get rid of CARB right after I eliminate the IRS... ...

Too late. . CA has had a unique blend of diesel for some time. Even the LSD before the now famous ULSD was different. There are lower aromatic levels allowed. So in short we already have a boutique type of blend. This only became even more stringent after the change to ULSD for both on and offroad across the whole US. CA diesel is still different than every other state.

Years a major oil company wanted to release a formulation, to be used by everyone, that did not have an oxygenate in it, yet it burned cleaner than the formulations with the oxygenate. The oil company and the state of CA went to the EPA to have the portion of the law, stating that all gasolines must contain a certain% of oxygenate, removed and or give the state an exemption from the Federal law. The EPA said NO, so the state decided on having MTBE put into the gasoline. We now know what a mistake that was. Now we have to blend a certain % of ethanol into the gasoline. The % of ethanol is going up to a minimum of 10%. Currently the levels are around 3-4% ethanol by volume.
I work in the industry and we are hearing that many of the refineries are tooling for the production of more diesel than in the past. Maybe this will help keep the $$ of diesel stable :rolleyes:.
I pay the same price as everyone else and I can even say the prices are getting out of hand.
I will keep doing my part to minimize the price, I can only do a small part to keep the prices down, but I can press a couple buttons and drive the price up due to the refinery shutting down. I will only press those buttons if needed for the safety of my crew members and/or the nearby city residents. I enjoy my job and take great pride in doing my part to keep the air clear.

Oh Heck, I just got my CA registration for my 13 year old truck, it was $223. $154 of it is a weight fee! What a joke for a truck that runs around empty during the week and tows a few times a month! I have also heard that when bringing a truck into CA, DMV requires it to be weighed at an official weigh station so they can rape, oops I mean charge you the appropriate DMV fee.
Is your truck a commercial registration? I don't have a weight fee on my registration.

Mo' money!

Bug Out:

SMOG rules may be a threat, but reality will set in when you get to pay that wonderful use tax again on your truck. You might want to reconsider returning. :{:{
I believe he'll just have to re-register the truck and pay some fees(be sure and have a weight tag from a public scale). They outlawed the "smog impact" b. s. fee afew years ago. I imported my special ordered vehicle from Dave Smith Motors in Id and paid sale tax once here in San Diego. Our DMV has a website and F. A. Q. should have all his answers.

A weight taken at a public scale suffices. $10. 00 at Mayflower on Miramar Rd. State gets none of that. That's a great place to determine your axle weights and total weight all for the equivalant of 2. 5 gal. of diesel. :{

I heard that all re registerd vehicals from out of state must be visually inspected by a lisenced shop. It must meet all of its build sheet smog devices ie cat. if factory equip. must be installed intake heater operational. the big rigs in California are having to get smoke tests completed annually it is just a matter of time. get it done before the state increases fees due to our state of the state

Smog stuff

All the visual "stuff" is still on there, but its unknown if the stuff is still inside those items... :)

well my first truck was bought out of state and when i brought it in i weighed it though i dont remember if they looked at it i was close to 7k. anyways they did a walk around visual and said nothing about it not haveing a muffler nor did they really look under the hood. im registered commercial which is the only way you can register a pickup unless you have a camper shell and it is "permanant". basicaly im saying is put a camper shell on it and register it for cheap and if you get pulled over and asked about it just say its in for repairs.

as for smog right now there is nothing for diesels and in talking to a guy at the BAR they arent going to start anything till 2010 and thats only on 07 and newer since the BAR which is seperate of californias goverment probably wont come out with specs for the older diesels on soot and sound outputs. thats how you get away with exhaust thats too loud. chp sends you to the refeere(BAR) and they dont have a spec so you pass and the ticket is signed off with no problem.

Bekim,

Yes, it's a commercial registration. From my understanding, all pickups without a camper or shell on the back must be registered commercially. If it isn't and you haul something in the back w/o a shell on it, you can get cited. One of my friends had a camper on his truck, he damaged the camper and dropped it off to get repaired. He was then hauling groceries in the back and got pulled over by a SD sheriff for it. The pattern on the license plates are different for commercial vs non-commercial. So when the sheriff saw a pickup with no shell on it with stuff in the back, and a non commercial plate, he saw a chance for a ticket.
