I guess so, it does suck, i do not wanna get one either, the mechanic didn't feel it was necessary either, but he went through the motions, got his book out saw that it required nothing, confused my heater grid as modified then retracted it, revved the engine and took my 60 bucks plus 8. 25 for cert. , but he did talk to me about the clowns that come in with cold air intakes not approved, and hi ram intakes not approved easy fails. he stated they have a list of approved aftermarket parts, so they are out there, but no tuner, or boost fooling device is approved.

Go to carb website. cold air intakes are fine as are aftermarket exhaust. 98. 5 up to 2002 there was no cat so dont worry about that. I smogged my truck with AFE intake, DD2s and smarty in place. Just set smarty to program 0 and it will put out 1/2 fuel. Absolutely no smoke and they have no way to detect it. Most important thing to know is you can not have any codes active in the truck. . make sure you clear them all first then go in.

Actually that was a limited time offer,The CARB had no testing protocol for the diesels,so they gave a grace period for the aftermarket guys to have their products tested to be able to receive the eo numbers required.

Products in Progress List - This list contains add-on and modified parts for diesel vehicles that have pending exemption applications with ARB. NOTE: The list expired on September 30, 2011, and thus is no longer accessible. Parts from the Products in Progress list that did not receive an EO will fail the visual portion of the Smog Check inspection. A new Products in Progress list may be posted no later than October 28, 2011, if manufacturers meet the new criteria for parts to be listed.

Well i guess my info must be dated, but i remember looking at a list that i think was on this site. It listed what needed and did not need an EO number. I remember that auxilary fuel tanks, exhaust as well as exhast brakes, intakes were on the no EO number required section. Only reason i remember all that is because i looked up everything i had on the truck at the time and i was fine. Now if that has expired/changed in the last several months i can not comment on that. Obviously the DD2s i have and smarty are a no no, but with the smarty set to 0 there is no smoke even with the injectors and the technician has no way to detect the programming only codes, so i was golden.

Far be it for the state of Cal. to provide any useful, easily accessible information relating to after market product approvals, test procedures, etc. . for diesel truck owners. The CARB site, or maybe is was the BAR site, referred to the "Good Guy" shops (that follow inspection, test procedures to the Nth degree) in contrast to the shops that were more lax in the process. Makes me wonder just how concerned the state is with the carbon footprint of our trucks... seems more like just another corridor for that blood sucking Sacramento to bleed the populace.

It's here.

Mine just arrived. Registration is $386. Smarty's coming off for a while,prior to the KO1 reflash,then smog and finally updated Smarty going back on. I'm out of money and breath. :{

There you go, we all know the real truth. The state could give 2 middle fingers to our actual health and safety, they just want our cash. I guess the bottom line is follow the "rules" your test station wants. Like i said i had no problem smogging mine and dads even with the mentioned after market parts and it sounds like some places are being really strict. (perhaps stepping over the line depending on which info you can believe) If i had all the stock parts i probably would have thrown them on just to be safe, but when i talked to the guy ahead of time all he cared about was the snap test and that any smog equipment be on the truck that originally came on it. And to make sure there were absolutely no codes. I actually know a guy who works for carb and he has a dirtymax that smokes like a train, i give him crap and usually sock him in the arm everytime i see him. It doesnt improve our situation, but it makes me feel better for a few minutes anyway. :-laf

Finally had the test yesterday. The inspector never asked me a question, just looked under the hood and truck. plugger in the computer and ran it up several times. Then he told me I passes. $45 later(with cupon) I was done.
I had removed my BD X hook but it was such a pain that i probably will not reinstall. My hands do not work that well anymore.

I actually left my J-Hook on the mechanic didn't look at the turbo at all, just kept thinking my grid heater was too tall, so he thought it was modified haha

be careful when you clear codes. i changed battries 4 days before smog and since computer reset and no history i failed. had to return after 70 mile drive and pay another 28. 00.
