Hey guys,

I have a few questions regarding tv service. We currently have regular analog cable service in our home now,but I may be changing. We are moving in a few weeks, and the home we are moving into is already wired for sattelite(Direct TV),and the homeowners are leaving us their receivers, dish, and such. They own the receivers, and the dish, and don't want to bring them with them. I am wondering if it is worth us getting the Direct TV service for ourselves,or stick with our cable. I am sort of looking to go cheaper, and I can get Direct TV service at a discount through my employer(Verizon). Our current bill for the cable TV,and internet service is around $100 a month, and that is just basic analog cable. I can get DSL service at the new house(for $29 a month),and the discount Direct TV(I think around $29 a month, but I am not sure on the packages yet),but I am concerned about missing out on sporting events such as my Bruins, and Patriots. I don't want to have to buy the big Center Ice packages, and Sunday ticket just to make sure I get these games. Do any of you guys know if I will get blacked out on either of these?I emailed Direct TV,and they really didn't answer my questions.

On a side note we are buying the Entertainment system including HD ready TV from the homeowners, and I was thinking the cable may be a better bet with HD stuff, but again I am not sure, and would liketo stay on the cheap if at all possible. Any input on this, and opinions of the two different systems is appreciated. Heck I am even open to Dish network if they are the better bet. Thanks in advance.

I am getting Dish network hooked up as we speak,my cable rates went up 5 bucks in one month so I am going back to DSL and sattelite they can keep there cable.

No brainer IMO-

Our DirectTV system has been awesome. We have had it going on 5 years now (no cable available). In almost 5 years our reception has never gone out. We have never had to have a service call. The picture is always crystal clear. There is a wide variety of free commercial free music available, as well as pay per view movies that you order with the remote.

Since you have all the equipment set up I would give it a try--you won't be disappointed. I would however make sure the dish is mounted well and all hardware is tight. A strong wind moving the dish even a little is the one thing that could cause a problem.

Ditto on what Greg said - DirecTV is far better than cable. I used to have trouble with crappy picture quality on cable. Since switching to DirecTV 4 years ago I've never had a problem.

DirecTVs high definition channels are flawless and the just put another sat up a few weeks ago. Pretty soon 150 channels of high def programming will be coming on line.

The bandwidth of any transmission medium has a limit. So does the cable coming into a house. The more channels cables adds means less available bandwidth at some point and the picture quality will suffer, especially HD which uses lot of bandwidth. DirecTV (so far) has added more transponders rather than reducing bandwidth.

Ditto "No brainer"

Have had DirecTv, since 98, Awesome! yeah the prices have gone up a bit over the years, but not as much IMO.

Footbal fan as well, with DirecTv you can get Sunday Ticket and watch ANY game, try that with cable.

When you load up the camper, buy an extra dish and place the reciever in the trailer and take it camping with you, thousands of RVs can't be wrong.

I suspect in the near future they will be offering even better deals on recievers with buiilt-in Tivo and DVD record capability. GO FOR IT!

Just re-read your post concerning sports, by subscribing to local channels you get the same broadcast as local cable, news, sports, whatever. If local station is showing it, you will get it.

Had Direct TV would never ever go back! Customer service sucks! Dish Network has been trouble free. Direct does have a better selection of ppv movies but why not go with netflicks and watch what you want.

So it seems to me that Direc TV is a solid choice, and even Dish network is better than cable. I just hope I don't miss out on my Bruins,or Patriots. I guess if I had to I could go over my brothers house which is within walking distance from the new house. Thanks for the input, and I welcome anymore.

This might help answer questions. If the sports you are looking for are local you can get local stations on your dish. There are also many different sports packages you can get.
