Does anyone have any advice to offer on the Calgary Stampede of 2000 ?
I am leaving Florida in late June, driving to Calgary to attend the stampede for a week in July. We are meeting several friends from the west coast there and planning to party day and night.
We will be camping in my Lance camper along the way, but staying in a B&B while in Calgary.
Any help or advice will be appreciated.

Jack;

I work in Calgary, and live just outside of Calgary. My wife and I have been to the Stampede every year we have been in Calgary too.

Tips for out of towners or never-been's;

1) Make sure you get to the parade on the Friday morning (July 7). It's a blast!

2) Try to get your hands on SOME tickets (the good ones will be gone long ago) to the FINAL (Sunday July 16) Rodeo and Chuckwagon Races. The cowboys go for the $50,000 purse. It is very exciting, with lots of energy in the air.

3)If you enjoy country music, get a Stampede Schedule while you are here, as some big names play the Stampede at the Nashville North tent. Admission is FREE with your ticket into the Stampede grounds.

4) Take the C-Train TO and FROM the grounds. There is no parking... . if you try, you will be driving around for hours. Make it easy on yourself, and take the train.

5) Buy a bunch of Dentyne gum. If you present 5 gum wrappers, they usually give you 1/2 price on admission or something like that.

6) During the Stampede MAKE SURE you read the local newspaper, and listen to the local radio to announce breakfasts, as there are literlly 30 or 40 pancake breakfasts around the city. The BEST one, is usually on the first Saturday at the Chinook Mall parking lot in South Calgary. All of the breakfasts are free - it's a tradition in this city.

7) Wear western clothes. Around this time in the city, it's tradition.

Maybe us Calgary and area bombers can get together for a day for coffee's while you are up here!

Enjoy your stay in Cowtown, anyway!!!

Shawn, Thanks for the very helpful tips.

as a related matter, I have seen articles that Canadian authorities are ticketing trucks with campers that exceed GVWR. Since my 11' Lance camper clearly exceeds the GVWR of the Dodge 3500 truck, I will be overweight significantly. I have carried this camper over 11,000 miles with no problem and believe the airbags give me a strong margin of error, but I do not want to have my trip to the Stampede terminated due to Govt interference. Any comments as to how much risk I am taking on.

Jack;

If you are only travelling in Alberta, your I would consider it to be a "low" risk. The Trans-Canada Hwy is heavily patrolled however, but they are mostly after big OTR rigs - just be cautious on the TC.

British Columbia however is an entirely different story. For a camper and truck, you are in "high" risk territory. It's actually truck and campers that they have been after most actively in B. C.

See you here soon.

Just to follow-up... . we made the trip from Florida to Calgary, and then across to Wawa, Ontario for fishing without any problems at all. The only scare we had was in Montana when we passed some truckers and heard them talking about big truck campers being checked entering Canada, but no problems developed!
