BE sure to properly connect cable to "antenna" and "radio" ports on the SWR meter, then key the transmitter while the operating frequency is near the center of the CB band. Adjust the knob on the meter for a full-scale reading in the "forward" position, then with the rig still in the transmit mode, switch the meter to read SWR or reflected power. The goal is to reduce the SWR or reflected readings to MINIMUM. Once you have obtained a reading, and assuming you want to reduce the SWR below its current value, try another reading at the TOP, and at the BOTTOM frequencies of the CB band to see if the antenna is too long or too short. If the reading shows LOWER at the TOP of the band, your antenna whip is too SHORT, and needs to be lengthened - or if it gets WORSE at the top of the band, the whip is too LONG, and needs to be shortened. Adjust the whip a small amount at a time, perhaps a half inch or so, and keep track of results - you'll soon have your antenna tuned the best possible to the frequency you desire...
