Attention: TDR Forum Junkies
To the point: Click this link and check out the Front Page News story(ies) where we are tracking the introduction of the 2025 Ram HD trucks.

Thanks, TDR Staff

Would anybody buy a unit with this statement....

Maxx Start Battery

thanks for the links. i looked them over and i think that my truck is simply classified wrong and should be declared a "pickup" and does not fall under the CVRA

4C is Cab/Chassis Extended 4 door.

My buddies is lableld same as yours. He also told me that the previous owner was in the military and it was difficult to get it registered civilian. There is a possiblity that his is labeled wrong too. We need others here to list their body types. I'll check my 2500 mega tonight as I read it this morning and it did not say "PK" for puckup, I just don't reemeber what it said.

checked this tonight

Actually. . mine (2500 Mega) is a 4C as well but my class is HW and the veh. type is 32P

anyone else willing to share their registration info on their 3500's?

I will be trying next week to get the registration corrected. just need to find a certified scale (CA authorized) around here

Any CAT scales near you. I needed to have a 1 ton Chevy from Texas weighed. Went to a scale near my work, drove up on the pad and went in to pay etc. there was this gal moving big weights on a balance beam. The thing was huge!

nothing between me and the DMV. I'll keep searching for a scale the DMV will accept. there are a few truck stops that I know of about 10 miles the opposite direction

I tried to get rid of the weight fees on my 06 by getting registered as and RV. I have a shell on the truck and they would not go for it. If you have a slide in camper you good to go and then your weight fees are gone. I heard somewhere that CA make like 30 million dollars on the bogus weight fees. Why would the default registry of a truck be commerical?? plain BS:mad:

this apply's if you are disabled the weight fee's are taken off your reg if you get handicap plates and Yes you can still tow anything you want . My crewcab reg for a year was 45 dollars but before the plate swap it was 265. 00 go figure I guess you can say Calif the land of the Fee if they can find away to put a fee on it Calif does it .

Pavemen, have you checked in the Yellow Pages for a certified scales? I've seen them listed there. Once I weighed at a Mover and Storage, it was free, if I needed it certified just $5. 00.

Well if you just tell them you have a shell it won't work, you need to say it is permantly bolted and has seats and seat belts. but be warned if you get caught hauling anything in the bed it is a stiff fine. don't matter if it is just a bag of groceries, if the cop wants it is a ticket.

Did it at AAA they came out and looked at the truck. They had to dmv code book with them and said it did not meet the criteria for and RV or motor car or what ever they call it, seems like the lack of "cooking" was the problem. for what its worth

Body type: PK

Wt fee: $257

I was curious about the wt fee and looked it up on DMV site. My question was: Does it matter if it is 3500 or 2500 (special fee for 1 ton)? The best I could determine, the answer is "no". Wt fee is based on the unloaded wt of the truck. There are no wt ratings indicated on my reg, probably because its tagged "PK".

thanks, and I am finding the same thing, no special fees. my truck should be just a pickup and one of its associated types. i need to get weighed and go get my title out of the safe deposit box and head to the DMV for the fight.

not sure if AAA can do title modifications like that. i suppose i can call them and ask though.

I just went through that with my 07 C&C and what a pain in the ***. Some one made the mistake and registered it at 5500 unladen weight. I noticed it when I was registering it for 26K and the the clerk didn't know what to do about it. so after about 7 hours in DMV in two days  it was finally taken care of. Its a good thing the dealer still had the original weight cert. , due to tools and ladders full tank (55 gal) and the hassel of it all. Of coarse there was more money involved. I not sure of the amount because I just paid the registration at a little over $500 and then gave the DMV another $350. I hope yours doesn't go that way. Good luck and take some reading material. BTW, they no longer have the "Utility" type for beds in their books and it took a couple of phone calls to Sacramento, they finally settled on "Variable" type.

Steve...

I'm fortunate to have a farm in two states one California and the other Missouri. Both California and Missouri law enforcement ask me how much time I spend in each state. My answere and the correct one was " whats half of 365?

So guess where my heavy farm vehicles are registered. Legal and my insurance company has no problem with it considering the preminums are about the same in both states. Why do you think most people who are river rats (colorado river) register their boats in AZ? Pretty soon the only one registering in California will be illegals, and they don't register their vehicles.

All your comments above cause me to stretch my right arm and shoulder out of joint trying to pat myself on the back for my decision to move away from California in 1988 a year after I retired from the Navy. I miss the beauty and multitude of things to see and do in San Diego but I sure as heck do not miss the crowds, traffic congestion, influx of illegals immigrants, politics, oppressive laws, and outrageous taxes.

Last week I spent half a day visiting Hollywood because I'd never been there. On the advice of an acquaintance I pulled down a side street off of Hollywood Boulevard in front of old apartment buildings on both sides of the street and found an empty parking space in a long row of parked cars and trucks. I checked and double checked the curb and street for markings and looked along the sidewalk for signs controlling parking. I saw none. I left to walk along the hall of fame, ate lunch, and took a two hour vehicle tour of star's homes. I got back to my truck about three hours later and found it was the only one parked on the street and had a $50 parking ticket on my windshield. Surprise! It was marked "NO PARKING" "STREET CLEANING. " I looked around an found a small orange portable folding sandwich sign about three or four spaces up the street where I had not looked or walked advising citizens that they could not park there. I guess all the locals knew what time to vacate their parking spaces. California!!

It appears that the dealers (or chrysler)themselves can register the trucks wrong. I found a memo on the DMV website about Ford registerting the Sport Track as an SUV instead of a Pickup.

No one else out there w/ dually info?

Those of you with 3500's in California, what is the registration setup you have? This is for non-commerical use, but the truck is listed as a "4C" type (commerical, not a simple pickup) due to weight.

My current registration has an "unladen/G/CVW" weight of 1500lb (typo in the original registration I assume) instead of the listed 10,500lb.

I am trying to get it corrected. Not that I want to pay the additional weight fees, but it will keep me from having to smog in 2010 as CA is implementing it for 8500lb or lower GVWR diesels.

Are you guys with "regular" registrations paying only the regular weight fee, or that plus the CAWR fees for the 10,001-15,000lb class (to meet the mfg GVWR on the door sticker)?

I need to find a scale and weigh the truck for the base weight fee and then they want me to pay the CAWR for the weight class I want the truck tagged at.

This post got me checking into mine. So I searched for the proposed law ( October 15, 2007 - Mendoza Bill to Reduce Air Pollution Signed into Law ). Then I checked my trucks. My 2006 2500 has an unladen weight listed on the regist. as 7210 lbs. But checking the sticker on the door, it says a GVWR of 9000 lbs. The law, as I read it, is not unladen weight but GVWR. It seems the only vehicles to require smog checks are what? ..... Mercedes, VW, Isuzu, etc. ??? Basically, cars. I would think that wouldn't include any 3/4 or 1 ton trucks. Seems like they are either being really nice to truck owners or are just missing the boat. Of course they have plenty of time to change the proposal. Reading further, it seems this is kind of a "test". Reports will be made for analysis.

The California smog law will be as follows in 2010:

source: Health and Safety Code Section 44011

Exceptions to the requirements:
(8) (A) All diesel-powered vehicles manufactured prior to the 1998 model-year.
(B) All diesel-powered vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 8,501 to 10,000 pounds, inclusive, until the department, in consultation with the state board, pursuant to Section 44012, implements test procedures applicable to these vehicles.
(C) All diesel-powered vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating from 10,001 pounds to 13,999 pounds, inclusive, until the state board and the Department of Motor Vehicles determine the best method for identifying these vehicles, and until the department, in consultation with the state board, pursuant to Section 44012, implements test procedures applicable to these vehicles.
(D) All diesel-powered vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 14,000 pounds or greater.
(b) Vehicles designated for program coverage in enhanced areas shall be required to obtain inspections from appropriate smog check stations operating in enhanced areas.

Given what I posted above, the 2500s would likely be the first to be tested after all the light duty trucks and passenger cars.

Then the 3500's would come next i assume as that weight range is identified separate from the lower rating. That is only an assumption on my part.

of course, the 8501+ GVWR trucks would only be tested if the state finds if feasible (or at least profitable as that is their main concern)
