John G here. . I'm getting abitious for a 'new guy'. but I wanted to ask if any of you fellows have any info you could share about Calif. emissions, removing the Cat, etc. and so on. . I know nothing about the diesel rules, so any comments are welcome. . Thanks in advance. . JG

John, Welcome!!

So far, as amazing as it does truly sound, the CA legislature hasn't as yet established any sort of emissions testing for diesels. Having said that... you can feel somewhat safe in doing pretty much anything yopu're willing to risk to your exhaust system. I took my muffler off a year ago and haven't looked back.

But... . here's the Big But..... I would think that if a cop wanted to be a bit nasty, he/she could decide that you were in violation of a noise ordinance, or something else, and site you on the spot, and then it would be up to you to go to court and fight it.

Enjoy the BOMBing disease :D

Go for a 4" exhaust.......

Keep the old set up and if, you know it will happen, they come up with smog rules you can reinstall or find another method to pass.

What it will really come down to is if they can find a way to make money off of it.

More Calif. ques..

Thanks Tom. . I'm not too worried about the noise, as I intend to keep everything quiet, perhaps two flow thru mufflers. or such, with the 4" pipes, and I guess I lied a bit when I said I knew nothing about Calif. rules. . I did know that there is no 'Smog Check' like w / gas motors, (one piece of great good news, as I had already decided to 'Move up' to the Ram diesel), but I keep reading about 'CARB' and 49 state trucks, etc. . I guess I was infering that there might be some rules (other than noise), about removing the CAT and also about jacking up the HP. I read somewhere, like TST, or such about not going over 270hp Cam Plate, as anything higher hasn't been tested to CARB standards. . ?. . Anything more you or anyone else can tell me?? Thanks again. . John G Oo.

I think I forgot to mention prob the biggest ques. I was interested in. IS the CAT on these '95's a restricting factor?. . More than factory muffler, less? Dumb. . I don't know what a CAT looks like inside or how they work. . What would be the result if I just took out the CAT. . Etc. I'm trying to get a handle on how these components work. Thanks. . JG

John......

CARB = Cal. Air Resources Board.

My lawnmower probably doesn't meet thier specs.

Cats are more restrictive than mufflers. And they will clog after a while.

The bottom line is if you want to Bomb your truck do it. When and if they do smog checks you'll have to worry then. As with cars I'm sure the Cat will be required if it was there from the factory. Other than that there will be some sort of test to see how your particulates are. It can still pass most of these even bombed. Lots of other states have these tests and people do pass with bombed trucks.

I had a small 4" resonator on my truck that could probably pass for a Cat. Same with cars, they just do a cursory look underneath to see if it's there.

John,

My cat is in my shed just in case CA ever gets around to checking emissions on my '95. If my smoke doesn't kill the tester I will flunk for sure. Believe it or not, there is a piece of pipe available from Dodge that replaces the cat. It's called a cat test pipe or something like that. I don't have the part number handy so do a search and you should be able to find it. I posted the number some time ago. Maybe someone who knows it will chime in here.

P/N 52019170-AB - $53 list - shop cost is about $40 or so

They Will probably have to order it, I've never seen it stocked.
