This thread was reported to me and I have removed the off-topic debate. I'd like to keep this open so the ideas and help can keep flowing.

Once your on the dmv computer you'll never get it regestered again. I bought a motorhome from a dealer out of state and had the same thing happen to me. cost me less to go buy a small piece of land in bullhead city to regester it. The ca dmv knows all of our tricks and they will get there money any way they can. There even getting stricter with custom frames for the buggies ang jeeps.

Im with tpuig, go visit the border, I mean you do have full coverage insurance on it, right? at least for the time being. Fill in the blanks.

Odd... . right before I moved I registered a Jeep Wrangler that I bought out of Florida and it had about 5200 miles on it. I reigstered it at AAA and they were confused about the law and I managed to talk the nice lady into agreeing that the law only applied to vehicles of the currentl model year!

I also bought a new Ducati at ProItalia in Glendale and the bike was a 49 state bike that was shipped to CA by mistake. Registration on that took forever, but somehow the dealership worked some magic. It ended up getting registered after all - don't know how... . Sorry I realize this doesn't help - but might spark some ideas... . or not.....

I have brought three out of state trucks into CA now, they have to be purchased with more than 7500 miles on them, I think the only exception is if you are forced to purchase a new vehicle due to your previous vehicle being irreparably damaged while you were driving out of state, and even then you would have to have real good evidence, and may still have to be a border state... I got away the first two times with not paying sales tax, bought the truck and let it sit 90 days, then brought it into CA and registered it at 100 or so days, no tax. They got wise to that, now you would have to wait a full 365 days to not pay tax. sorry about the side note... but i think there is no way around your situation, aside from selling it or registering it out of state. Good luck.

The exceptions to the no new vehicle registration (copied from DMV document posted as a link earlier)

As a California resident, you may register a new out-of-state vehicle certified to federal emission standards only if you:

§ obtain it as part of an inheritance or divorce settlement

§ purchase it to replace your California registered vehicle that was stolen while out-ofstate; or

§ purchase it to replace your California registered vehicle that was destroyed or became inoperative beyond reasonable repair while out-of-state.

When you apply to register the vehicle, you must show proof - such as a court order, police report or repair invoice - that you qualify for an exception

Proitalia... . Wow that is less than a mile from my house. right up the street from me. Did you live in calif at one time?

Anyways, zues, what did you write on the paperwork and title? Under 7500 miles?

That completely sucks, but I must not be understanding something. I bought my truck brand new in Reno, Nv. and registered it in Ca, where I live. How is this possible, but not your truck?

All I can say about this is I AM SO HAPPY I DON'T LIVE IN KALIFORNICATE! Those people have been sold out, sold under, and sold over.

Lots of CA bashing going on, me personally I like CA and the SF bay area. Been on tour the last three years and am looking foward to going back. To get on topic I bought my truck in GA with 164k miles and registered it here in Key West FL. My tag is good until 12-08 at which point I may not be in CA then. Thinking of letting it ride until say October/November then deal with. Sounds like the whole problem is a mileage matter. Also concerned about meeting smog my engine is the 305 version.

Unfortunately, California has some amazing places to go. Beautiful country, lots of history. But the "save me from myself" attitude of some of the people is beyond me. Like many other states with large population centers (Washington, New York), the cities dictate what happens in little towns. If L. A. thinks they need to have twice a week garbage pickup, and SF agrees, it becomes state law. Because of smog in L. A. , you have laws like the one being discussed. The Governator sold them down the road in many ways. Very sad. And very, very, scary. As was mentioned, as CA goes, so goes the country. And look where we're going. Lots of that is rabid environmentalism that was started in CA.

Rant over.

I could tell you I register my Dodge in Idaho where I am a resident for $30 a year and live about three months a time in California to avoid hassles with the DMV etc, but the key here is getting your problems squared away without bashing Califonia anymore... ... . Please post all the particulars from your transaction-bill of sale, title and mileage shown, etc. As most things, with the California DMV it is all about money and protocol. If the paper trail of your transaction for the vehicle can not substantiate the 7500 mile minimum for import then perhaps there is a form and fee to pay that will enable you to move forward with this. Most of the people working at the DMV will look at you like a cow at a passing train when you explain your situation, but kill them with kindness and explain your dilemma and how you would like to make things right. Get everything in writing and don't waste time speaking with someone low (clerk)on the chain of command-start with the desk clerk and ask to include the office manager in the conversation. It may not be cheap, but I am sure that with enough time and energy you can get this taken care of. My wife and I have been back and forth with the DMV because we have vehicles registered in both CA and ID. I am a resident of Idaho and my wife is a resident of California-crazy. We got hit for having her Audi TT registered in Idaho and were ticketed and had to convert it to CA registration and pay the fine, regardless of whether I was going to return it to Idaho a few months later. It sucks being manipulated by the beaurocracy in this state but sometimes it is required in order to get the monkey off your back. Good luck.

I would keep copies of the approved registration, cancelled check for payment, and print the DMV link that pertains to this issue that was posted by John Cooper. Have these in hand when you stroll up to the counter at the DMV so you can avoid having them bully you. The fact that they accepted your initial registration and payment under the original circumstances should help give you a leg to stand on. The other thing worth researching would be to qualify what differentiates a Dodge truck of your vin # from being California certified and Federally certified when it comes to emissions. This may just be a technicality.
