Ok, what is the scoop with the Cat or Resonator or what ever we want to call it this time. I want to put on a Banks exhaust and I would like to drop the Cat or Resonator. We first have to identify if it is a Cat or Resonator. If it is a Cat can we take it off? If it is a Resonator can we take it off? I am really confused with this whole issue. Can someone help me out?

From what I understand the Cat/resonator or whatever you want to call it is an open design and doesn't utilize the conventional honeycomb catalyst structure found in gasser cats. I read somewhere the Cat presents very little restriction to the exhaust. If that's the case I would say leave it on there and do a cat-back system. I would bet the muffler is more of a restriction than the cat.

at first, but after some time, it will begin to plug up and you can kiss it goodbye then... [will plug much sooner with engine fueling mods]

nicleinonen it's designed to not do that, because it's set up like a straight-through muffler (if what I heard is true, I think it's discussed in the last TDR Magazine).

Thanks everyone for your comments. I saw a thread with a picture of what they said was a resonator not a cat. I looked under my truck and it looked just like the resonator. Can someone tell me what a cat looks like or put a picture of one on here. If it really is a resonator, it sounds like I can legally remove it?

The Picure shows a cat. You can not LEGALLY remove it,although many have. Living in Kalifornia we are taking our chances removing it.

Hey,

If you live in this S**thole of a state we call california. first, its time to get out. Annex it and give it to the foreigners. HAHA:eek:

Since thats prob not an option.

Buy a cat off of someone else that is not using theirs on the truck, get a air hammer and bust all the material on. Weld it on with your new exhaust. If a chp pulls you over or get in a CARB checkpoint, they will pass you for visual. If they tap on it and notice your cat is hollow, all they can do is give you a fix it ticket so throw your good one on and get the fixit approved. If you try running it without your risking a $1500 fine.....

just my . 02 cents

Did this on my camaro for over a year and never got caught in 3 pull overs and loud a$$ car hahahah ;)

When I did the exhaust on my cat equiped truck a nasty man used a 2" speed bit on a drill extension and removed the entire center of the cat. Will pass visual and if you tap on it the sound okay. Only thing I can get is a fixit ticket. Maybe that guy wasn't so nasty, he helped me do the work on truck, but he did throw away the egr

I have a CA '04 and have 4" from Turbo Back, the cat is in my shed where it belongs. Runs and sounds great, when they start smogging diesels I'll have to put it on for the check only, then it will go back to the shed.
