Calif. OKs World's Toughest Smog Rules

By TIM MOLLOY, Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES - California air regulators Friday unanimously approved the world's most stringent rules to reduce auto emissions that contribute to global warming — a decision that could affect car and truck buyers from coast to coast.

The regulations are expected to cut exhaust from cars and light trucks by 25 percent and in larger trucks and sport utility vehicles by 18 percent. The industry will have until 2009 to begin introducing cleaner technology, and will have until 2016 to meet the new emission requirements.

The move by the California Air Resources Board came despite vigorous opposition from auto industry officials, who argued that the board did not have the authority to adopt such sweeping regulations and that they could not be met by current technology.

The industry has threatened to challenge the regulations in court. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites) has expressed support for the proposals and has pledged to fight any such lawsuits.

Heat-trapping greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide are believed by many scientists to contribute to global warming.

Automakers will be required to reduce emissions by way of such innovations as better air conditioners, more efficient transmissions and smaller engines.

Automakers argued that the regulations would raise new vehicle costs as much as $3,000. But the agency's staff said that the automakers had exaggerated and that the cost increases would top out at about $1,000 per vehicle by 2016.

The new standards could have coast-to-coast effect: Because California represents 10 percent of the national auto market, the auto industry often overhauls all of its cars to meet California's standards. Also, other states sometimes follow California's lead when it comes to adopting clean-air standards. California is the only state able to set its own vehicle pollution standards. Other states can adopt either federal vehicle pollution standards or California's.

Well, I guess they figure that if raising the prices of fuel won't work, then make the cost of the vehicles more! I went by the local Shell station at noon. Regular was $2. 09, premium was $2. 30 and Diesel was $2. 40. This is one of the higher priced stations but what they do is usually followed by others in the area. This is only going to get worse in the years ahead.

It's interesting that the agency people think they know more about what the cost impact will be on autos than the people that build them to meet the new smog requirements.

If they would fix the traffic problems out here a lot of the smog would go away as the vehicles wouldn't just sit idling for long periods of time in the morning and evening rush hours. Here is the Santa rosa area, the traffic has gotten really bad. in the last 10 years it has gone from stopping just north of town all the way back to Windsor which is about 8 miles up the road. Granted, a lot of the problems are due to stupid people driving that shouldn't be but the main problem is there is just too many cars for roads we have. This means the smog here will soon be as bad as in southern Ca.

Oh hell, need to get off the soap box! :(

 How do you explain the moron's that time the signals?Insted of setting them so you have a flow, they make you stop at every one!The Fwy over pass by the house has 4 signals and if you can make it through one you miss the others. 40 cars going one way and one on the off ramp ,it will stop the 40 and let the one through!

Just read where our great "Leader" Arnold just signed a bill that makes smoging 76 and up cars and trucks. No more 30yr rule!Even Jay Leno tried to talk him out of it!!

another dumb law

"California banned most hand weeding by farm workers, saying stoop labor leads to back injuries. Instead, long- handled tools are to be required"

-Wall Street Journal 9-24-04

how long did they say it's going to take for California to fall off into the ocean? :-laf

It seems like Cali is already full of idiots. Somehow the people that make all of these screwed up rules continue to get elected and also send bigger idiots like FineSwine to Washington D. C. This tells me that the non-idiots are a minority in the state, and should move out!

The only way Cali will be happy with emissions is if every vehicle left the state.

I personally don't have a problem with imrpving emissions standards over time, but if you look at California, I. e. LA - are there any alternatives to driving around? How is their public transportation? Maybe they should take some of those high taxes you pay and put in some trains to help with smog other then penalize you for having to drive bumper to bumper for hours on end.....

Public Transportation in LA is horrible and none exsistant! Well, I heard about by 2016 the rules will be in place, guess what, I won't be in the place at that time. I will be in a nice place like Idaho with trees, assault weapons, blue skys, big diesel trucks, and a much whiter and brighter place :-D

Since when does Cali dictate to the auto makers what they should build. I would like to see detroit stand up and not ship any new vehicles into the state when the new regs come into law.

You guys go gather up all the idiots and deposit them in California, I'm going to go beat on the fault line with a sledge. Anyone that wants to help is welcome.

count me in to,sledge, air hammer, atomic bombs, the more the better, the faster the better

The solution is simple

Stop all vehicle sales in Ca ..... Let them walk ... ... ... ... Stop ALL Semi's from going to CA with any products..... Ground ALL planes from flying into or out of CA due to emissions. Then just wait for the "smog" to get better or for the state to fall to the ocean witch ever comes first.

Why is it that they have to F it up for the rest of the country??

Anyone see that 10. 9 Movie about the chain of quakes along the coast and in the end a section of Cal. sunk into the ocean leaving an island? Bakersfield becomes ocean front property as well as barsto. The island is like hollywood and the grapevine and such. Frantic movie!
