California Smog issues

So I am thinking of an EZ/Comp box and/or Exhaust. Alot of the exhaust systems don't include a cat converter. Also the Edge web page says the comp box is not "California" aproved? So who is going to find out?



I don't give a hoot about if I have a cat converter or not but I am wondering. What smog checks does California have or have planed for diesels? I used to have an old 1980 Olds diesel and the smog check consisted of verifying that it had not been converted to gas. Thus far I have not been require to check my 1999. Has anyone had to smog their truck. If so what did they do?



I don't think I want to straight pipe it as I am not interested in waking up the neighbors that much. But no Cat will be cheaper/easier to do.

No catalytic converter on your 1999 ISB. No smog check in California either.

Cats were only on the last 3 or 4 years of the 12 valve engine in Cal. Also, an EGR system was required. The 24 valve, 98. 5 on, passed the emiision standards for Cal w/o a cat/egr. Diesels are exempt from smog inspection in CAL. I wouldn't be surprised if diesel inspection starts in a couple of years. The emmission standards are getting tighter all the time.



If you make alot of smoke you can be stopped and have to do a test of exhaust smoke. From idle to floored to idle to floored to idle then floored again for the test. This takes in to account the diesel engine tends to 'load up' at idle. Excessive smoke will get a fix it ticket. Proper running Cummins will pass this w/o any cat or egr.



My Banks pwr pack came with a piece of grey tinted plastic so you can get an idea where your setup is, another nice thing was the CARB approval stickers for the exhaust and twin ram intake manifold. Putting them on the door jam and inspectors would consider your truck legally modified.
