Well, I was truly disappointed to find this out. While processing an online registration for my motorcycle I happened to check the "New laws for 2008" section of the California Department of Motor Vehicles. Right there, second from the top was a reference to Diesel-Powered vehicles.

It said that diesel-powered vehicles manufactured after the 1997 model-year that have a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 8,501 pounds would be in the biennial smog check program starting in 2010.

Not sure if this was proposed, or actually in place to happen, I wrote our Bureau of Automotive Repair who runs our smog check program and asked. They wrote back and said "The test that will be implemented in January of 2010 for diesel powered trucks will be a visual and an OBDII computer test only. There will be no tailpipe test. " So, I guess that it is for real.

It would appear that they will be looking for catalytic converters as well as your on-board computer to see if you are running an after-market program or have flags showing that you have.

Such a shame as my truck gets 3 miles to the gallon extra in the city and on the highway running my Smarty Jr. than it did stock.

Boomshaw;

Gross Vehicle Rating less than 8,501 lbs, - what is the rating on your SB - QC, 4X4 ?

I would think it's at least 8,800lbs.

Thanks!

Thanks HPetrat!

You are right! I had in my head that my truck weighs like just under 7000# and I didn't look at the "actual" GVWR. My door states the GVWR is 9000# so I am fine. Thanks again!

Arnold and company are hard at work amending the new diesel emission law you can be assured. It's coming. With our huge deficit,he's looking for yet another "user fee". Hang on to your cats gentlemen.

A friend runs a smog shop and it is going to be 13000 or less he said, they are still hammering out the details.

"Visual and OBD test only, no tailpipe test"... That would work fine with my Liberty CRD with hollowed out kitty. It "looks" like it is there and the damn thing does not smoke (all stock), it has no sensors after the kitty, so the computer does not know it is "modified". No worries if there is no tailpipe sniffer.

so you have to unload the software once every 2 years for a day... big deal. .

i've been dealing with smog testing up here in southern ontario since the 90's. i really need to find the emission test slip i got. . being mine has no egr or cat, every item on the test was N/A. they idled it for a few minutes looking for visible exhaust smoke. i even unloaded my smarty thinking they were going to do an obd2 plug in test but nope. . scan the vin number on the door then idle the truck looking for smoke. completely painless except for the $35 lighter wallet

It's a real shame you can't just send the bast ards $35 and say you done the smog check. Kinda like our out of control spending Democrat Gov here in Arizona who flat out stated the speed cameras on the Arizona freeways and highways are for revenue generating purposes#@$%!#@$%!#@$%!

I posted this a while back during my registration issues (it showed my truck was 1500 lb unladen, so I'd fall under the smog rule as no way a 1500 lb truck could have a gross rating over 8501 lb)

What years had cats on them?

The plate on your door post has the number for gross vehicle weight rating. Registration uses curb weight. Cats were on 12 valves which are too old for this smog check thing to apply. I don't know about 3rd gen trucks.

Cat was on trucks built Jan1, 1994 to Dec 31, 1998 and from Jan 1 2004 up.

but you know the DMV here... i didn't want to deal with having to get out of the smog requirement by showing my door sticker, when the curb weight was so low they'd likely assume that i had to smog.

i know my gvwr is 10,500lb as stated on the door sticker.

In spite of their attempts to ignore the law, they can't do that. I've had some problems with the local DMV in Eureka. One time I had to look up the law and rub their noses in it to get the weight fee waver for handicapped plates.

Where did you get a 1500 lbs curb weight? That sounds more like a net load rating or something like that. My '95 was a curb weight of 6300 lbs.
