Correct this dunce cap if I'm wrong, but there's is 2 bolts holding the calipers on the knuckle, right? And they have a star shape, right?

Assuming that's right, is it going to take an impact wrench to remove those buggers? TIA.

Oh no, now wait just a second. The bolts I looked at had heads on them that looked like a star, or more like a sun shape. In that case, a socket would go over the head.

But, if I missed the fact that there is a torx bit relief in the center of that head, then I'll be a monkey's uncle. Course I could've missed it, but did I? I do have torx bits, driveable by a socket wrench, I hope I missed something. Could it be a year model difference or something (I have a 2000 model).

My 97 bolts take a 3/8 Allen key. I don't recall the torque spec but the 38 quoted above is correct or close. The threaded part is not real beefy, don't use an impact.

Sun or star shaped = torx bit (usually).

I heard somewhere that around the Y2K model year they went form an allen head (as on mine) to a torx head.

Caliper bracket to knuckle -> 16mm (I think) 12pt socket, 180 ft/lbs

Caliper to caliper bracket (the ones going through the rubber boots) -> torx @ 30ish ft/lbs

I have the allen head. Someone said to lube the shaft to keep it from sticking and causing the truck to pull one way or another. What should I lube mine with?? :confused:

I used silicone grease, the type used to lube light bulb bases, ets, available in small tube at most auto parts places. Works for me. bg

Now this seems to be more like what I'm facing. I did put a 16mm socket on it and fit real nice. Plus I haven't been able to get the thing off, too much torque. I'll get some WD-40 on it tonight and take a real good look at it but I think PC-12Driver and I are on the same page. Except I thought it was a torx bit socket ... maybe its a 12 point? I'll check that too. If it is, I'm gonna feel like a real horses butt.

you don't have to take off the caliper bracket (12 point 16mm bolts) The caliper bolts are torx 45 and come off real easy. Just did mine yesterday and all went well. I stuck my vacum pump on the bleeder and opened it and pulled outwards on the caliper to compress the pistons a little and they came right off. New carbon metalic pads are great

Later Mike
