How do you drain the transmision fluid in a 5spd?

I was at Black Mountain Diesel Saturday getting my new South Bend Clutch installed and Tom gave me the riot act cause my truck had 75K on it with out have the transmission fluid changed. :rolleyes: :)

Does the 5spd have a drain plug or do you take the inspection plate or something off?

Once drained were do you refill it and how much do you use?

I'm going to run Amsoil in the transmission and the diffs. So I have to make another trip to BMD. :)

Thanks

I think that the bottom access plate bolt is the drain plug, not sure with out looking, but I think it is the center one. There is a fill plug on the side. I was told to fill it to about a half inch from this plug, assuming the truck is level. Not sure about capacity right off hand.

I should have shown you the drain & fill plugs while you were here, Darrell, that makes me the dumb one... :D

When you get ready to come back for a visit, I can show you how & where, and anything else you can think of to ask, between now and then. :D Plus you can use the garage & lift, no charge. I'll help, so we can ensure more oil gets in the truck than on the floor. :p :D

Knock off the PTO cover. This will drain most of the fluid. You can get the rest out with a rag. By removing the PTO cover, you can get the magnet out of the bottom and clean it. This also allows for removal of more fluid than just pulling the bottom bolt on the PTO cover. The fill plug is on the side. It takes a 17mm hex key to remove. Just fill up the transmission until it you can't get any more in when the truck is level.

I'll have to take you up on that one Briar. :D

I'm pretty good at getting oil on the floor too. :p

How was I to know you have to put the drain plug back in the oil pan before you refill it. :rolleyes: :{
