Test and Tune Day

Looking for a few good men to bolster the ranks of the Alberta BOMBers Club (let's just call it ABC for short-less typing for me :D). Hang out with individuals who understand your craving for diesel smoke! Take road trips to various scenic destinations in Alberta like High River or Michichi! (and how many of you really know where Michichi is anyways? :) ) Be the 1st on your block to own ABC clubwear-alright so it doesn't exist yet-but probably at some time in the future!!!!

Basically what I'm babbling about here is that we (and I include myself very loosely in the "we" part seeing as I really haven't done that much :D) are trying to get the mad BOMBers of Alberta (and as stated in the title eastern BC and Saskatchewan) organized into a group of guys that can meet for coffee (or maybe something stronger depending on the circumstances!) and talk diesel stuff. We may even let a Ford or GM guy show just so we have someone to heckle ;) -don't worry though, I'd stop before I made you cry... .

If you're interested PM me through here-or for those of you reading this that aren't members toss me an email at -- email address removed -- for more details... ...

Still looking!

Our ranks aren't totally full yet-still room for a few more dedicated dieselheads at the ABC table! Shout out to let me know I'm not just talkin' to myself here :D!

Apparently not Doc... ... I keep yelling and all I hear is my melodic voice wafting back out of the canyons :D. Oh well, if I keep yelling long enough sooner or later someone will come out of the woodwork and tell me to shut up!

BTW offer still holds for my guiding services if you and your posse :) wanna see some of the scenic Drumheller Valley when you're out to Stampede.....

Wisconsin Has Been Annexed!

I'll tell you what - it sure feels like we're in Canada now. Sheesh - snowing right now as I type!#@$%! I'm sick of this winter in spring crap! What an April Fools joke on us. #@$%!

Did I mention I'm not happy about our weather?! #@$%!

Good luck Jason.

Came back here again today too Dave-I was too depressed to even leave the house :(... ... No real snow but the wind was howling out of the north and the temps were down. Supposed to get nice again Thursday just in time for me to go back to work-I had such big plans for these days off too. Still hoping to get the mirrors put on as well as change my toolboxes and get my #$@$# COMP box on finally before I lose it from my back seat-already fell out of the box once!

Yes Larry-they are assembled and sitting in a box waiting for Mother Nature to give me a decent enough day on my days-off to get them on    ! I have a pile of parts here big enough to hide Oscar the Grouch and his trash can :D that I gotta get on here ASAP so I can get the gremlins all shook out before July comes around-getting closer all the time.

Hoping this weekend coming up that I can get some of this stuff done... . but with my luck a tsunami will come through... ...

Maybe I missed the thread. Did you explain what all you had to do for the conversion? Is it worth the trouble? I was just thinking, if you did not have the flip ups on your trk. , you would have to buy 2 sets to get the heat & elect. controls, right? Rather expensive!! Anyway, would like to hear what you had to do. Thanks,

Larry

I never did post a thread because I wanted to get them mounted to make sure I had the electrical part figured out first..... but here is the mirror assembly part in a nutshell. You are correct-if you don't have the flipups from the factory you have to buy another set. I managed to get a used set with the glass knocked out of them to keep the costs down there. You have to remove the glass from both the original non-power ones and the new power ones (smash it out of the old one, unclip a big wire ring from the new ones) to access a big pushnut that holds the head onto the arm itself. Using a prying-type tool :D you have to pull the pushnuts off both-careful, they are under spring pressure! You can then remove the old head from the old arm. To get the new head off the new arm, you have to remove the electrical leads from the connector, pop the plastic arm cover apart to fish the wire out, and then you can remove the head. Then you split the old arm apart, fish the wire into it, pop it back together, and assemble the head to the arm with one of the pushnuts you removed... . This is a very simplified way of explaining it-it's really a PITA! But this is the only way to do it-the bases are formed differently at the pivot point so you can't simply swap bases  . Under any circumstances, DON'T PULL THE PUSHNUT OFF THE BASE POST! Frigging near impossible to get it put back together-took a big C-clamp, socket and 4 hands to get it together-and it was still probably the better part of 1/2 hour before success was achieved... ... .

When I get the electrical part figured out for sure I'll put something together with some pics (using what's left for parts in the basement)-but probably not here-photos seem to have a short shelf life around here lately. I'll have to put a page together on my site I guess.

Like I said before-it's a PITA to do it-I think the end result is worth it though. The new ones actually have 2 heaters in the head-1 for the flat glass and 1 for the convex! Should work super-good in the cold-unfortunately I probably won't get to test that for a while. Maybe I'll go out with a squirt bottle and ice them over some morning to test defrost function! Guess I better get them on the truck first  ... ...

Jason

Sounds like a real PITA job!! I think you can get the glass replacements from Magna, if I remember they told me the glass part was removed by using 2 screwdrivers, or flat pry bar on each side and they will pop out of a socket, then push new ones back in the socket. Did you find anything like that in there? If they work, it will be worth your trouble, they are nice. Thanks, hope they work, let me know.

Larry

No-the glass in the original factory power heated ones (the 6x9 standard ones) apparently snaps off the power part-but these trailer tow ones use a big wire clip that works like a C-clip to clip the glass to the head. You can tilt it up, release it from the locks on both sides, and then pull the glass right out. Slick-when I get it done I'll put some pics showing it all.

And I tried to mount them tonight-of course the connectors are not compatible and the new wires need to be extended about a foot  ... ... so I'm off to see my brother at the dealer tomorrow to see what I can come up with. I WILL get this done if it kills me!

Jason

If you have trouble getting the conn. , let me know, I will cut the ones off of my original OEM's and send them to you. I can probably get new ones and solder them on.

Larry

I'm doing a little digging right now to see if I can find new ones-someone on here back a while had posted that the OEM ones were Yazaki..... and by golly if I didn't find a website. May not peruse it much this evening as it's past my bedtime already... ... but tomorrow is another day. One way or another I'm gonna lick it... ... I do appreciate the offer of your old ones though! Hate to see you cut up a set of mirrors for them though-I thought about hacking mine but I promised them to my brother for his '98.

Jason

No problem, all you need is the conn. 's, right , I'd just cut wires about 1" from conn. , could just solder new ones back, and use shrink tubing.

Larry

ah ha! Knew if I trolled around here long enough I'd get a bite! :D Send me a PM or email me (my address should be in my profile) and we'll talk ABCDEFG (Alberta BOMBers Club-Diesel Enthusiasts Forget Gas)!

Still prowling through here looking for guys interested in the ABC! I think I've pretty much spammed :) everyone from Alberta now-although I think I've missed a few along the way. Interested? PM me or drop me an email at the address in my profile! I have to talk to the Big Kahuna here one of these days but Me Myself and I be thinking that we should try to get together once before the big event in July... ... I'll see if I can track Scott down and find out a good time/place and we'll go from there.
