SMOG LAW REPEAL Collector Car, June 29 Vote HELP

They are at it again!

I just got this info from one of my buddies about the California Senate Transportation committee is going to sneak a smog law onto the books and recall all 1977-earlier cars, trucks, vans, wagons, kit cars and specialty vehicles.

Dooms day is Tuesday, June 29th! Please read info below and help stop these guys from ruining our hobby!

Tuesday, June 29th, the California Senate Transportation committee will be considering Assembly Bill A. B. 2683, which if passed, repeals the above rolling exemption on cars thirty years old and newer. This means that from 1977 on, all cars must pass a biennial smog test. As the Senate Transporation Committee is made up of eight Dem's and three Repub's, things look rather bleak unless we can hit the committee members with e-mail and telephone messages objecting to its passage. As the time is very short, only those two options remain viable.

The Senate committee Chairman has stated that they have had very little information from the general public regarding the pros and cons of this bill. In case you M/A members are unaware, the Assembly Transportation Committee (who authored this bill) did get a great response from car folks, but ignored their inputs and passed it anyway on strictly partisan lines, the Dem's having an overwhelming majority in this committee, as the do every where else in the California Senate and Assembly. This bill is is really being driven by the California Air Resources Board, trying to hang the failure of their smog reduction programs on one and three quarters of California cars (400,000 vs 24,000,000, or 1. 6%).

I ask you to take five minutes of your time Monday, June 28th, and call or e-mail the members of the Senate Transportation Committee and let them know that you, your wife, and all your relatives are very much against this legislation.

Just a few years ago, car clubs fought very hard to get Quentin Kopps S. B. 42 passed. It passed in both the Senate and Assembly Transportation Committees, and was signed into law by the Governor, who by the way, was also a Democrat. If it was good law then, why must it be repealed now?

Below I have listed the e-mail addresses and phone numbers of the Senate Transportation Committiee members for your reference. Of course e-mail is free, but if you also decide to phone in your opposition to this bill, I would suggest!!!

To make it easier to email our senators, here is the list of email

addresses. Just copy and paste to your email program [under to and CC]

and you're done :)

Make sure to use subject :

Please vote "no" on Assembly Bill A. B. 2683.

Current law in California makes cars and trucks 1975 and below exempt from smog checks. If the law doesnt change, in Jan of 2005, all vehicles 1976 and below are smog free. It's called a rolling exemption- example - Jan 1st 2009, all vehicles 1980 and below will be exempt. Good law so i will be reading that happened with the outcome. let you know in a few...

Hey guys- Well it has passed the senate commitee, so email you senators and tell them what you think about this bill. As for the only letter i recieved back from anyone on the commitee that I emailed, only Tom McClintock replied. Gosh, i love that guy if we could only have more of him in the Ca Legislative system, it would be a little better here..... Here is the letter he sent:

Thank you for your e-mail and I am in strong agreement that Assembly Bill

2683 is a bad bill. As Vice Chairman of the Senate Transportation

Committee, I have always opposed all such bills. I voted NO on Assembly

Bill 2683 on June 29th in the Senate Transportation Committee.

Unfortunately, however, the bill passed out of the committee. Be assured

that I will continue to fight against this bill on the Senate Floor.

Take care,

Tom McClintock
