Any of you guys ever build your own scoot? I'm looking at what's out there, and want to build me one. I haven't had one since I rebuilt a basket case 78 back to stock, and then some. It's been a long while.

I want to look at getting another one... I don't want a stock Harley, unless it's a Softtail, to install a Phattail adapter kit on it, with a 250 tire.

What frames are good? Complete frames, for a ground up build. I like the ones Exile Cycles offers, but they are pricey. Don't want a cheapy frame though. Don't like too much rake like on the Jesse James bikes at West Coast Choppers.

And it has to take a 250 or 260 w-i-d-e tire ! So anybody have any good experience with aftermarket frames?

Here's the scoop, got a friend in Alabama asking me if I want a wrecked Softail he has in his possession. He doesn't want it, for certain reasons, one of which it was a friend's, who, ahem, bit the big final road rash on it. It's not worth it unless I can find a frame, etc.

I've never built one from the ground up before. The 77 FLHC is just the way it came from the factory (first year that Harley made the Classic) with the exception of a few added chrome pieces, the XLCR is bone stock, and the 79 is modified in the motor only. You might check JP Cycles.

Briar,a good friend of my family has his own fabrication shop,he builds custom bikes year round. They would know anything about this you need to know. IMO,these guys are probably in the top 5 of bike builers in the country,I think they are the best,well they are right down the road from me,they sell rolling chassis,frames,wheels,everything you need,or a turn key bike,built to your specs. Call them,ask for Paul,the owner,or his son Paul,they can help you. These guys are to bikes,what DTT is to auto trannys. they just built a new spiderman bike,it is unbelievable,and it is suppoused to be in the upcoming spiderman movie. Thanks, Snowman, I'll check into it. RattlinRam, already got JP Cycles catalog on the way. I saw their ad in" In The Wind".

Doug, I like the new V-Rod bike, but I got my heart set on a traditional look. I like the look of the Dragon model that West Coast Choppers has. www.westcoastchoppers.com That's the look I want.

As for actually building it, my buddy Psychostroker owns KC Customs www.kccustoms.com in Santa Rosa, CA, and I can't go to anyone else for getting it done. They won't do it as good as he can. It's gotta be out of his shop, or I won't do it. I'm torn between building a scoot, or building a pulling truck. Guess I can build a truck when I've grown up some more.

briar: never built one myslef. always fortunate to have friends more knowing than me. regarding aftermarket frames. most are major manu. are reliable. sometimes have to search for what you want: hartail vs. softail, stretch vs. standard. been riding about 30 years and i usually prefer the reliability of stock. however, s&s out of viola ,wi. has made reliable motors for years as well as parts for those who want to build themselves. now, within the harley clone market fat tires are real popular with offsets ro allow these tires to work. good luck. any major magazine catering the the harley type bike will provide you with plenty of info. several of the most popula: american iron, hot bike and easyriders .

I'm in the final stages of building my Fat tired softail.

I've saved a lot of $ buying parts off ebay.

Be careful, you have to know what the parts are worth and what fits what. I had the motor from another bike I sold so I had a starting point. Picked up a Extreme Cycle frame for really cheap(check out their site). Ive seen some really good deals on rolling chassis on ebay.

I'm in final assembly and figure I built this bike for half of retail plus my labor. And I used all the trick stuff.

Actually I am running a 200. 96" with a six speed, narrowglide frontend, torsion arm softspension, chain drive, etc. , etc. etc.

Plan on riding this one hard. If you are not in a big hurry, you can save some real dollars on some of the big ticket items.

Transmissions, front ends, wheels, etc.



I'm building my bike to ride not show, but will still be a very clean ride. On a budget.

briar, check around. i think there are less expensive places to buy parts, etc, than JP Cycles. if you haven't already done it, pick up a recent Easy Riders mag or Hot Bike, and look at advertisers. Fog Hollow by St louis sells stuff pretty reasonable. Drag Specialties also has good prices, generally. i believe the most recent issue of Hot Bike had a full spread on frames. ... ... . might have been the one before? if you need to know for sure about that, pm me, and i'll look at home... ... .....
