Tappets add about 400% more potential risk, and 200% more worry.

If at all possible, avoid replacing them yourself. The risk is very high for dropping a tappet into the oil pan.

I don't care how cold it is outside, you'll be sweatin' more than a ricer at a TDR rally...

I can agree with that in reviewing the procedure. They are inexpensive but I didn't want to mess with plucking them out and then stringing them through a tube. Glad mine was low miles.

Brandon says with new cam and truck tore down. Should of replaced the tappets. If I can do it you can do!!! wifey

so how long did it take you to do the swap?

how long would it take a shop to do with all the tools at hand?
Took me one day the first time and 1/2 day the second time around.

Never did a cam swap on a Cummins but have done plenty other cams and this was in a shop environment with all the needed tools.

Additional notes from my install experience:

1. ) The power steering pump has 3 mouting bolts accessed through the holes in the pulley. Remore the top and left it'll swing out of the way pivoting on the third. No need to remove the pulley that according to the service manual is not reusable.

2. ) The fan can be a PITA but it is possible to unbolt the bracket from the block with the fan attached and remove it as a unit.

if the cam lobes are still smooth and there is no sign of pitting then i wouldnt replace them, in my case i had some pitting on my cam swap so i opted to replace them. my opinion. josh
