Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Cam or Crank Position Sensor??

One of my friends has a 99 and he said the last week or so that the tach would drop off and check engine light would come on and would start running bad all of a sudden. What sensor could this be?

You need to see the P-code to know for certain, but bets are on the crank senor if it is still running.



When mine failed a friend at Cummins Mid-States in Ft. Wayne IN told me to check the crank sensor first. It is esier to get to and he thought most likely.

Cant really check it perse without the proper tools & software, so my "checking " was sticking a new one in the hole and see what happens... .

It sounds like the Crankshaft Position Sensor. Mine was verified by the folks at AutoZone. $80 from the dealer out the door (price varies dealer to dealer so SHOP). Cummins NW sells them for $40 or so but they were out. Kinda a pain in the arse to replace though not real difficult. My tach however didn't bounce as others have stated. Good luck!

What are the p codes and others symptoms of faulty sensor?

I don't recall... Heres a link to the Code List for 24 valves. The OBD II code reader will tell you what it is though.

The code for the crank sensor is 0336 mine started last week, not gotta see if a dealer nearby has one available a Cummins dealer that is, the local parts stores don't carry it and its a 5-7 day special order

Dealer has one about 20 min away for $60..... the darndest thing that light went out and has now been out going on 2 days so i don't know what to think, maybe a bad connection to the crank sensor i dunno... . still getting it checked out again... thanks for the info.

Sounds like the typical symptom for a CKP!!!! Eventually will stay on, but will aggrevate the heck out of you :{ till then and eventually will stop you when all of the heck is gone!!!!!!!

Well I picked up the new sensor this evening so we will see what happens, the guy at the dealership said it also possible that a small particle of dirt or IE;trash was on the sensor and that would also cause it to act up. But if it decided to go completely out i have the new one to replace it with...

Local Cummins was $45 recently. How would "trash" get in the crankcase and not show other symtoms???

I wished there was a local Cummins dealer here but not so... . anyways i was told by Autozone also that i could be possible that a piece of Foriegn material could be the culprit( IE, Trash/dirt) But i thought the same thing how in the world could that be possible, when servicing i take extreme care doing so and i know as long as i have been doing my own oil changes and filter changes there is no way anything got in there, then i happened to remember that i have had the transmission serviced 3 times along with being at the dealership right after purchase for transmission warranty work, and that the first year it was serviced by a lube place, so i guess it is possible, the guy at the dealership said it didn't take much to cause it to act up even a small speck of anything on the sensor would cause it to read funny.

We shall see/... ... ... ... Oo.

CKP update

Well i will be calling the dealer tomorrow, well their a dealer but mostly a garage now, they sell very few new vehicles they have like 5 sitting on the lot but i started to remove the starter bolts to replace the crankshaft sensor but no go, the starter bolts won't budge and i don't want to booger up the bolt heads, going to call them tomorrow and see when they can get me in to do it.

That thing is just out of reach and of all places to be right next to the starter against the block , hmmmm maybe a redesign or possibly the only place it can go, oh well, i will let everyone know what i find out when they do the work just a little FYI in case its something else. The light had been off for going on 4 days then came back on when i was taking the GF back to her vehicle, i noticed to that i was down to about 1/4 tank of fuel, after dropping her off i fueled back($2. 05) finally back down some, light stayed on, came home about 1 1/2 hrs later went back out and the light went out, i know a cple of pple posted thats a typical crank sensor acting up, just thought it might be helpful to those reading the post.

Yup, Sounds like a crank sensor alright. Just as a gauge I drug my feet and changed mine in about 1/2 an hour. If the guy has ever done this before he'll know right where to reach to get that top bolt and just the right cheater on the bottom stater bolts. The sensor itself is gravy. I did unhook the batteries, as my luck with the high amp cables would have sparks flying from the starter B-terminal.

its finally done

Well took the truck in this morning for the CKP sensor work, 2. 5 hrs later im out the door, why? not because of the shop but because the old Sensor was virtually froze in the block, it had to be tapped and brough out with a sheet metal screw finally...

$75. 00 for the work and $63 for the sensor. . Im glad i didn't try to replace it myself, that would have involved a roll back for sure after getting to the point of no return with that sensor froze up, main thing the dodge is fine now, that has been the first thing engine wise i have had to have done, so im thinking im doing pretty well with it. Oo.

Well, you now know the other half of the CKP problem!!!!!! Especially if you live where they put salt on the roads. What a PAIN!!!! That was the way I removed mine :{



If I could have got someone to do the labor for $75, I would have been happy!!!



Price you paid for the sensor @$63 was what the local Dodge dealer charged me for the part, but they had it in stock. Cummins was cheaper by about $10, but they needed 10 days to get!!!!!

Of course, the Dodge part was in a Cummins box!!!!!

Yeah im sure it was the road salt here, our winters can be awful here, its like i live in a different world right here in these mountains... Yeah i was happy witht eh $75 labor bill not bad at all, the place i had the work done their still a dealer but they only have 2 cars on the little lot right now, this one has been in business since the early 30's, so basically they don't charge dealer rates for work, they don't have all the overhead sitting on the lot which makes it great for people.
