No doubt some one at Banks is now posting for Comp. ;)

NOPE JUST THE SAME OLD ME , trying to give help where I can, some people tell me to quite education everyone, on the little things that make diesels work, leaving everyone in the dark . I now do most of my help in PM's , because it gets old when the same old people try and make every thread I give out infomation on a banter thread. Make you wonder who

Doug,

where are you guys installing these cams... straight up or a few deg(s). adv. or ret.

could you take a #3 and put it in 2-4 deg adv. and move the power curve down and gain a little more bottom end?

Scott

The cams get installed "straight up". Read the f1diesel.com website. According to Don they are machined from a blank so they can run whatever grind they need and don't need to advance degrees/teeth etc.

I have always enjoyed reading your posts COMP. Your perspective is ussually much more higher performance than I am looking for. But, I do learn something each time.

Well the guys we have put cams in their trucks are all happy. A cam is NOT like injectors or a box, it is a subtle change. It can make a big difference in the power band of a engine though. Take an F1 H2 cam, the truck makes power over about a 500-600 wider rpm range. This equates into moving fatser sooner. The H3 cam helped our truck to breath and make power to right at 4000 rpm, (the OEM cam dropped off around 3300.

Cams are part of a "package" and are a nice addition. But they should be installed with the proper expectations. Egt control, spoolup, power range can all be improved with the proper cam.

Doug Smith

I would agree with Doug, the cam is the gift that keeps on giving. I have never dyno'd so the higher performance guys have a better clue. For me very little SOP difference. The EGT's got very noticeable lower, about 200F at WOT and 100F at 1800 RPM. A surprizing significant drop in boost pressure also, maybe 4-6 psi at 1800 RPM. Spool up with the HX35 was scary fast at times. The Dodgezilla would often launch itself right into the surge zone until I worked that out.

so it sounds like you guys arent liking the cams? I was thinking about getting one, but maybe not?

Nah, I'm not saying that I don't like it - my truck definitely has more breath on the top end and now it doesn't fall on its face when it's time to shift gears. It keeps the nose in the air even at 3000+ RPM.

But as far as quicker spool-up, lower EGTs, and fuel mileage increases, I honestly can't say that I noticed any of that after the cam swap. And that was what I was after in the first place. I really couldn't care less how my truck performs at 3000 RPM and above, so I guess that's why I feel like it wasn't worth it to me on the performance side.
