Cam swap, Pros/Cons ??

Do you know if this benefit is allowing the 06 and up trucks to have clean engine oil, like the older trucks?

I'm not sure, as I haven't ran mine long enough to find out; however, I don't think so, as I've never seen that mentioned.

I've heard the black oil blamed on the 3 injection event scheme...

I just put a PDR cam in my 06 and after an oil change it gets black pretty quick. At only a 1000 miles or so, it's jet black. I don't think the Helix 2 or PDR increases lift much if any, I believe it's mostly valve timing. Piers Harry and PDR both said that springs aren't needed if your not going to go over stock RPMs or run very high boost. (They both also said no tappets if under 50K miles, so I didn't do that, either. ) But I have read other things such as what Eric posted above that's makes me a little nervous every time the tach gets close to 3K. I am still debating as to whether to add springs or not.

I put my cam in very early in the trucks life so I can't say before and after but I do recall the oil remaining relatively clean until the Smarty.

I've decided to go with the PDR cam in my 07. It arrived Wednesday, going in with it maybe tomorrow (MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ME!!) I had one in my 05 when I had it and was very pleased with it for the short time I had it.

Does an 03-04 stock cam have in cylinder egr? Would a 03-04 stock cam work in a 04. 5 and up?

I hear the 03 - 04 cam has much less, if any in cylinder egr. As for the next question I don't no.

I ran a helix 2 on a stock turbo 06 and although I could tell it had changed I would not recommend a cam as a practical mod to a truck with a stock turbo.

Care to expand on why?

I recently blew a head gasket in our shop truck. Instead of just replacing it we decided to go ahead and do a o-ring, port and polish etc on it. One of my good customers is a good friend of Bill Fletcher's. Bill ended up doing all of the head work on the truck and also stuck one of his cams in the truck. The truck has BD twins in it and the first thing we noticed was how much faster the turbos spool with the cam in. Haven't had a chance to get it on the dyno or even do any mileage testing with it due to all the snow we've gotten since I got the truck back. Bill made my head spin talking about the particulars of what he did to the cam and how he matched it to the head work that he did. As I get more time in the truck and some dyno comparisons of before and after I will pass them on. 585HP was the best # that we got out of the truck before. If you want some real particulars on the cam they will have to come from Bill. I don't know if he is on TDR or not. You can PM me any questions that you might have and if I can't answer them I will forward them to Bill. Diesel Power Products will be selling them as soon as we can get some pricing figured out.

I found minimal benefit in a stock turbo application. Faster spool is negligible as the stocker spools so quickly already and increased airflow really can't happen through the extremely tight exhaust housing of the third gen's. Not worth the money in that application IMHO.

Did you notice any increase in MPG's? I hear that is pretty good on a stock truck.

I did not notice a substantial increase. I did not however as I said earlier drive it as a stock truck for more than 900 miles before doing the cam swap so I really didn't acquire enough data to say one way or the other.

Got the PDR cam in today. Idles much smoother and a lot quieter. I set the valves to the 07 specs wondering if I should set them back to the 05 specs. More updates as I put a few miles on it.

My 99 was very clean with OCI's of 5k miles.



My 03 was clean with OCI's of 5k miles.



My 05 and 06 are black at zero miles.

First oil change since after i broke my cam in 6000 miles ago.



Changed my oil 3 times over about 600 miles this weekend. First time i drained two quarts and added 1 qt diesel and 1 qt transmission fluid, drove it down the driveway and back. Then drained it... put a cheap filter and cheap oil in and drove about 60 miles. ( it was clear after that) Then changed it again yesterday and drove 500 miles pulling a trailer. IT is still clear... ITs weird not having it turn black as soon as i crank it!! I guess i just had to get all of the old EGR sooted oil out of her.



So yes a cam change to eliminate the EGR does give you cleaner engine oil!!
