Thanks.
I will be gathering up some parts this weekend.
Yes, I will be changing tappets.
Take a tappet with you to the hardware stoe and get a plug that will fit tight and push in almost as deep as the bore. It has to be a smaller diameter than the outside of the tappet. Otherwise, you'll never get it through the bore. Also, get a small washer to keep from pulling the knotted string through the rubber plug.
The Cummins aluminum tray is a nice piece and really works well. See if you can borrow someones kit.
The dowels are slightly tapered on the very end. Almost just the ends knocked off or beveled. Cut a very thin slit in the wood dowel about an inch up from the end in the center. And when you push the dowels in, push them in some more. Don't ask how I know.
In order to "fish" the plug and line through the head and into the cam bore, use a short piece of coat hanger. Push the hanger into the rubber and it'll help you guide it right in. Then you can get the plug against the side of the bore and pull the hanger out. I put a full loop on the top of the hanger end so there was no way it could fall through the head if I dropped it. Also, makes hanging on easier.
An extendable mangent makes short work of pulling the tappet to the front of the motor along the tray.
Not a hard job. Just time consuming. Oh, if you drop a tappet in the motor, you can get to it without jacking up the motor. Hopefully, you won't have to find out.
