camp ground info near Mt. Rushmore (pets)

Hi all, Heading to Mt. Rushmore in July and would like any info you all have about campgrounds and thing's to see while we are there and we are thinking about taking Duke our dog this year (small dachshund), what is your opinion on taking pets with you Thank's Don

My Wife and I camp last year at the Rafter J Bar Ranch ( Camp Ground) in Hill City SD. I would highly recommend this camp ground. We had a pull through site with full hook-ups including cable tv, approximate cost was $44 a night. This camp ground has several different camping areas with different features and prices so call ahead.

This is a very good area for site seeing, we went to Crazy Horse, Mt Rushmore, Deadwood and Silver Lake ( I believe). Spent 10 days there and enjoyed everyone of them.

May also want to look into Custer State Park. It's in the area, but not right at Mt Rushmore. It is a popular place, so call early. We were camping elsewhere, but spent a day there sightseeing. It's an amazing place. The 1500 head buffalo herd runs free along with the donkeys, prarrie dogs, and others. This way, when you're not seeing Mt. Rushmore, you can tour right where you're staying. Just be out by the last week of July because that's when Sturgis Bike Week will just be getting under way and things will get hairy. That's why we were there and with some luck will be back in 09. Have fun!

We went to Deadwood in May of 07. While we were there we went out to Devil's Tower in Wyoming. I would really recommend going there. Pic 1 is of the tower and Pic 2 is a old railroad bed just outside Deadwood. -Jason

I used to buy a trailer life rv camp ground directory evey year. they have by state,town every rv park there. it grades the park for cleanliness, lay out and ammenites. gives last years rates and directions to get there. its a bout the size of a large cities phone book but i loved it. We stayed at custer, good hub to work from. robert

We were there in July 2008 and stayed at the Lazy J RV Park. Very nice, nice people, and deer came through our campsite. Overlooks Rapid city (and I mean overlooks!)

Take the Rushmore Tours - well worth the money spent for a a full day of travel and entertainment. Breakfast and dinner included. Lunch was reasonably priced at the Calvin Coolidge presidential State game lodge.

I am ready to go back just for the Black Hills, Rushmore, and Custer State Park.

The above picture from inside the bus - driver had almost 2" of clearance on each side of his mirrors. He was a great tour guide.

I like Custer State Park. We have stayed there twice before. We brought our dog. There are (at least) three state run campgrounds in the park. I don't think they have any full hookups. They are at three different elevations. When we stayed there in August we got reservations at the highest elevation for temperature consideration (5000' above sea level). It would cool down nicely at night. The South Dakota state park web site has thumbnail images of each individual site in each campground. When we stayed there I think the sites were $14. 00 a night. You do have to buy a park pass as well. Depending on traffic it can take a couple of hours to get to Mount Rushmore.

We were there in July 08 also, probably seen your bus going into the hole at the needles what a site to see. we stayed at Crazy Horse campground just south of Crazy Horse monument, and was able to see the nite show with the lites, but we still went to the monument. 18 miles to Rushmore, 5miles into Custer city and Custer state park. Have fun doin it all.

You might want to look into the Mt Rushmore KOA, 10 minutes from Mt Rushmore 20 mins to Crazy Horse. The campground in beautiful, horseback tours on-site, shuttle to Rushmore. They also have a very nice restaurant/bar on location. 10 minutes from Hill City.

We havent been there for several years. But we've always enjoyed the Fish n Fry campground outside of Deadwood.



I dont remember when the bike rally is in Sturgis. But, make sure you go before that happens. Gets pretty crowded around that time.

A group of us seven in total will be staying at Mount Rushmore KOA Hill City, SD (it looks like you can have pets there) July 2 thru the 7. Five of us will be towing are trailers with our D/C and three of us are TDR members. This will be our first trip to that part of the Country as we hear July 4th is incredible.

While we were on our way to Devil's Tower we came across a cattle Drive right down the road. By far the weirdest traffic jam I have ever been in. IceMan, I went with 14 other people We took over 2100 pics on the trip. The stuff we saw in the woods were unreal. -Jason

That beats my buffalo picture. We're planning to go again this August. Maybe we'll run into a cattle drive, too.

A number of year ago we were camping with a Jeep and a Tent Trailer and got behind a herd of sheep that were being moved down the highway to another pasture in Southern Wyoming - -for about 2 hours. We were so intent on watching the dogs work the herd we weren't paying attention to the rising stink. Time we got to a campground we had so much sheep crap on the underside of the trailer and the jeep we couldn't stand the stink. Two hours at a wand car wash and it wasn't much better. Went to a motel and about 2 hours later the owner asked to move the Jeep and camper to the far end of the lot.



Neve again will I follow a herd of anything!
