What year?

My model year 2000 has a wire for the shell. It's inside the left frame. It breaks out of a loom near the spare. The wire is white, is capped off and has a tag: CHMSL .

Works for me!

When I had a shell installed on my '95 the installer complained about having to run a wire all the way to the front on Rams (older ones?). My 3rd brake shell light comes from under the dash.

Adam,

I don't know the state of your cap install—you may wish to remove the bulb from the CHMSL on the back of the cab. I yanked mine because I saw it as a source of reflections with the cap on and of litle use.

For the older trucks...

If you have the tow package you can tap off the brake light wire in the connector on the hitch.

Cap Brake Light wiring

I ran a wire from the trailer hitch wiring harness at the rear of my 2001. When you put on the 4 way flashers the cap brake light will flash. But during normal braking the cap brake light works fine and does not blink on turns. By the way, it is a Leer Cap with the Browning package, real nice option, worth the extra $$$. Hope this helps!!
